Magistrate Hollinrake said he was attempting to follow the trend of sentence for simi- lar cases in Toronto when he levelled the fine but indicated he would not also impose a jail term since Bowes' betting operation was on a small scale1 and very few bets were placed over the telephone. Garth Ross Bowes 37, con- victed of the Vaughan Police charge October 6 when a state- ment he made to police was accepted as evidence he had been placing s2 bets for var- ious people. was granted until November 12 to pay the fine A Concord garage owner, convicted of bookmaking for the past year. was fined $1,000 or four months in jail when he appeared for sentence by Mag- istrate O. S. Holllnrake Thurs- day of last week in Richmond Hill. On our way home we talked of what a wonderful time we had at the New York World's Fair. We arrived home at 8:40 Monday morning, exhausted but happy Fine Bookmaker $1,000, Admits Placing $2 Bets Some of the exhibits \I saw were the General Motors build- ing which showed scenes of the future and Hollywood USA,‘ which shOWed how movies are made. and many, many more. The unisphere which Was the falr’s emblem weighed 370 >tons and could be seen from anywhere on the grounds. For this reason, we used it as our meeting place. One of the rides that I en- joyed was the glass elevator which was about ten storeys high. At the top, the height enabled you to see a‘ perfect; view of the grounds. The Swiss Sky Ride was another ride which gave you a good view of the fair. We left the Union Station about 8:30 Friday night on a once in a lifetime trip. Due to telling jokes and chatting, practically no one got any sleep. In the morning, about 9 o’clock we arrived at the New Yorker, a hotel in New York where we atayed. After breakfast we were turned loose on the fairn grounds. ‘ About 400 of us fellows won a trip to the World Fair by eagging 20 points. Liberal carrier boy 12 year old Jim King, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil G. King, South Tay- lor Mills Drive has reported to us in his own words on his recent trip to the New York’s World Fair. (Jim won the trip‘ in a circulation building con- test held recently by “The Telegram."â€"Editor.) Exhausted But Happy After New York Trip The Aristocrats Car Club has also assisted in this community project. The Richmond Hill Junior Chamber of Commerce will be holding a car safety check on‘ October 29 and 30 between the hours of 6 pm. and 9 pm. and on October 31 from 9 am. until 5 pm. at Richmond Heights Centre. Cooperating will be the Richmond Hill Police who will have an officer in attend- ance throughout the whole pro- ject. R.H.
