A: a matter of fact, a bazaar is a great many things. Imag- ination, zeal, co-operation, ef- ‘fort, hard work and honest sat- isfaction, to name a few. | Last Saturday Brown’s Corn- ‘ers United Church Women sponsored one in the Christian education room. and it was a gathering place for people from far and wide. Mrs Walter Brumwell is at Scarboro General Hospital making a good recovery after surgery last Friday. Probably the birth of her first grand- daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. Dean Brumwell on the same day in the same hospital made the picture a much happier one for her. Dick Jones and Elmore Hill have been hunting in the Hali- burton region for the past two Weeks and according to Mr. Jones a good rain is needed. The woods are tinder dry and fire an ever-present hazard. Another old landmark is gone from the neighborhood this week. The house on Don Mills Road south of Highway 7 which was formerly the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Mc- Quay has been demolished to make way for a plant nursery. Mrs. Morrison Sellar spent several days with her brother and sister Jack and Mary Rod- ick last week and on Sunday the Rodicks motored back to Mrs. Seller’s Brantford home. That spur of the fifth con- cession south of 7 High- way has been a real problem to anyone accustomed to travel- ling it daily, particularly school buses. But cheer up, a smooth- er day is dawning. Soon there will be pavement on this stretch Mrs. Harold Steffler, Mrs. H. R. Paterson and Miss Mary Rodick were at the Simcoe Street Clothing Depot (United Church) Tuesday of last week. Bazaar Successful Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Norman Reid who cele- brated their 30th wedding an- niversary last Saturday. Old friends and new vied for home baking. handmade arti- cles, candy. Antique lovers and children had a field day at the white elephant booth, as well as those lucky enough to pick up a good-as-new bit of cloth- ing. to salute international plowing match contenders in 1965. The match next year will be at Mas- sey-Ferguson Farms. What is a bazaar? If you ask the women who have held one recently you may not get a clear answer . . . they are still too grogzy. But they are happy too. To top off the afternoon. ‘ there was tea served by the‘.. happy timers in an attractive-; 1y decorated mezzanine. § Thornhill Session ' Washer Repairs AV. 5 - 2209 CORRESPONDENT: MRS. F. H. LEAF R. Queen Of The Furrow Linda Mernie Gale Ellas is her full name but her many friends call her Windy, Snowdrift or Gale. These stormy sounding names are due to the fact that Linda was born during a historic blizzard which caused the greatest tie-up of roads in the history of Ontario. It took four hours for Mrs. Ellas to make the trip from the fourth of Whitchurch to Yonge Street by sleigh while her husband and seven men shovelled out the road. They were met by Dr. Crawford Rose and rushed to the York County Hospital where Linda arrived safe and sound. That was seventeen years ago and since then Linda has spent her entire life on the farm with her father and mother Mr. and Mrs. Russel Ellas of Gormle},r and her brother Clem. Linda can just about do everything on this farm which specializes in Holstein cattle. In the summer she does the work of a hired hand plowing, driving tractor and milking cows. She has been driving the tractor since she was seven. Last sum- mer she entered the dairy princess competition at the Schomberg Fair and became the runner up for York County. Although Linda is interested in many phases of farm work. heigintei'ést in plowing came to a head last summer. She was suggested as North York’s choice for the “Queen of the Furrow” comp- etition by Harold Botham at a meeting of North York’s branch of the Plowman’s Association. She was coached by Leonard Wellman and was conse- quently entered in the York County Junior Match as p?rt of the preparation. She came third in a class 0 51x. On October 5, Linda was entered at the North York Plowing Match which was open to those who had never won a prize. She finished second in a class of six. Uniquely, Linda was the only girl in both matches. Linda Ellas is president of the Vandorf 4-H Homemaking Club. This year the club is working at making a duster and studying about good groom- ing habits. When she finishes she will have com- pleted 9 4-H Homemaking projects. She received county honours in 1963. . High school activities take up much of her time. A student of Dr. T. W. Williams Secondary School at Aurora, she was a member of the glee club, inter- school Christian fellowship and camera club in grade 9. In grades 10 and 11 she became an active member of discussion groups. Linda has many loves. She loves people, sports and music. She turns out for baseball, volley ball. basketball, hockey, tennis and will even pitch horseshoes if you give her a chance. She is fond of every form of music which in- cludes opera, the symphony, classical, folk and pop- ular music. She plays the piano, sings and dances. Dances include the Charleston which she dances with her father and she’s not to be outdone in the shimmy. the twist, waltz, fox trot and square dance. Linda is a charming and friendly girl with a versatility beyond the average. This comes from abounding vitality and love of life. She likes cook- ing and makes many of her own clothes. She doesn’t know what she will be in the future, but she has lined up a few possibilities so she can’t miss. She toys with ideas like being a social director, airline stewardess, dance teacher, polJice woman, airforce woman and finally she thinks she might just turn out to be a wife with two kids. “Think I’ll make it ?” she quips. That’s in the future, but more definite are her plans for re-entering the dairy queen and the queen of the furrow competitions again next year. Lihda collects' stamps. coins. and Elvis Presley records. She is still faithful to Elvis because he has such a terrific voice. “I hate girls who scream and I’m not exactly in love with the Beatles or the Dave Clark 5,” she said. Next time, try . . . 2 Markham Accidents Reported By Police bert Parsons. 32. apparently missed a turn on the Markham- Pickering Townline south of Highway 7 November 7 and plowed through a hedge and into a tree. He was unhurt and damage to the car, a leased vehicle, was $200.
