Mrs. Redelmeier e x p r e s s e d grateful thanks to G. Chatfield for the use of the cafeteria for In introducing Mrs. Phln. President Mrs. Ernest Redel- meier. described her personality and the reception of her re- marks and the expression of delight following them indi- cated how appropriate they were. Mrs. E. Spears, on be- half of the members presented Mrs. Phin with n_bouquet of bud roses. Mrs. Phin said the volunteer has rights In the hospital. "She has the right to expect the sup- port and loyalty of the staff. The magic formula for this state of affairs is good com- munication; each being aware of the problems of the other; each being willing to co-operate fully. The staff should be aware that it costs the volunteer to give this service." “Be informed†she urged. "Know your hospital, the num- ber of beds, the number on the staff and interesting items con- nected with the hospital. Do not be critical and if criticism is heard trace it and try to ease the irritation. It must be understood by all volunteers that they are there to relieve not displace a staff member," she said. It is important that each vol- unteer promote good public re- latigns for the hospital. A volunteer must be punc- tual, bearing in mind that she is relieving another volunteer who has a busy life outside and she must always notify the di- rector if she will be absent. The rule to follow here is the simple one of "Do unto others as you Would that they do to you." The doctor or a nurse may be a dear friend of the volunteer but the work of the hospital is a business and there must be no familiarity and titles must be used She reminded them that in the hospital there are people who are sick and dis- tressed and there must be no corridor chit-chat. . Her second point dealt with the association, between staff and volunteer. No Chit-Chat found expression in service. She felt that the basic creative urge inherent in everyone found sat- isfaction by giving help to others. “Hospital volunteers are spe- cial," said Mrs. Phin with pride. “All of us assist in money raising projects for one or sev- eral days but the volunteer in the hospital takes on a contin- uing service and as part of the hospital she is bound by hos- pital ethics.†Ethics, Mrs. Phin emphasized, can be summed up in the phrase, “good manners." Careful, instructions have been prepared for the volunteer so that administration and staff can depend upon her. Mrs. Phin reminded the members that personalities must be submerg- ed. Broken down they added to 126 days. Fifty-eight spare volunteers are used and in the first 12 days of November 26 were used. Mrs. Miller concluded her report by expressing her gratitude to the staff of the hospital for their fine cooperation. She reminded the volunteers that no organiz- ation can stand still and they must be prepared to accept changes and move from one ,de- partment to another. It..- a n "Volunteers are a group and if one earns praise the group is rewarded, if work earns censure the whole group takes the blame for volunteers exist as a group." she said. Getting down to regulations she said to people coming into the hospital a uniform indi- cated authority and the uni- form of the volunteer must ex- press the spirit of the hospital - ,_~-r.-_ “It must beiclean. attractive and Wogn in simplicity." She felt that the basic creative urge Inherent in everyone found sat- isfaction by giving help to others. Her subject was the place of the volunteer in the hospital and she spoke from long ex- patience as a volunteer and as past president of the Auxiliary of Sick Children’s Hospital, To- ronto. Each Vincent Hennebury, about 38, pleaded not guilty to the charge in Richmond Hill Magistrate’s Court last Thursday. Whether he could do one or 25 push-ups in his Vaughan po- lice cell didn’t help a Toronto stationary engineer much when he was arrested for impaired driving at Highway 7 and the Woodbridge Road.
