Rambling Around The art institute receives substantial support from the Ontario Council for the Arts and the Can- ada Council in recognition of the importance of the services that have been rendered by the institute in the field of visual arts to the public of the province. I suppose anyone who admires pictures and paintings can give a reason for his enjoyment of them. And I dare say the reactions of each will be as varied as the sands of the sea. So I will dare to give mine. If I’m drawn to a painting at all, it will be because it has a certain magnetism. It will cause my imagination to stir and perhaps there will be some attempt at fusion. As I see the artist, he or she is always looking out from some private hill top where they somehow find the life to breathe into their canvas. I believe that what they are trying to express is some of their own inner life, whatever of compassion, truth or beauty that is in them. The artist. in my opinion does not do this to renew society but to help those who look at his art to renew themselves. It_is as if one's_ eyes suddenly open to Noteâ€"Anyone desiring information about these travelling art shows should phone Mrs. Girard at 285-3370. -v -... -....V.v-.., vrv-l vu a new vision that one certainly was not aware 0 before. The artist is no propagandist, he does not want to capture my mind and harness my opinion, he is merely bearing witness that there is such a thing as singleness of mind and purity of heart and that within the misery and squalor of the modern world it is possible to see God. There may be artists who deny this conception like an abstract painter of my acquaintance who said that his pictures had no meaning and that it was foolish of me to look for one. I may be wrong but it did occur to me that he couldn’t paint mean- ingful pictures because he may not have experienced meaning and had nothing to communicate. It is my feeling that the true artist will always experience meaning and try to transfer this meaning to his canvas whatever his subject and the art lover will join with the artist when he discovers the meaning and takes it to himself.
