Reeve Donald Plaxton reported, at Monday ‘ night’s council meeting, noticing large numbers of all age groups of citizens, in areas where there are no sidewalks. walking on the road with their backs to traffic. Councillor Walter Scudds reported that the police and the works department had every available . man on duty policing the detour route. but admitted that conditions were somewhat chaotic. Mr. Handbury re- ported that the school principal had had to direct traffic at the times child- ren were leaving the school on Monday. "I would like Council agreed to send a letter to all elementary and high schools in Richmond Hill requesting the students to walk facing traffic because of the danger. in the municipality and urge the pupils to always walk facing traffic. This enables the driver to see and avoid them and en- ables them to see and avoid the car.“ he continued. Detour “It might give some weight of authority if we contacted all elementary and high schools their chances of recovering any damages from the driver are very small." The matter was referred to the recreation committee to ask them to come up with a work- able solution to the problem. Mayor Tom Broadhurst re- ported that recently one of the town‘s policemen had warned adults and children skating on the pond that it was unsafe and had received a very rude reception. The works depart-1 ment was asked to test the pond and found ice conditions unsat- isfactory. The policeman re- turned to the pond with the re- port and suggested the skaters leave. The adults refused the mayor reported, and set a very poor example to the children. Councillor Handbury sug- gested council initiate a voluntary patrol of the pond during the periods it is used and at this time have ladders and poles, which could he used in rescue work on hand. Councillor Scudds reported the sign means what it says. that the ice is too thin for skat- ing. “When the ice is thick enough the sign will be re- moved." he promised“ "But the works department "does not believe the ice is yet thick ienough for skating. Some parts ‘have thick ice but movmg water creates thin spots," the couné ‘cillor noted. He recalled that tractors had gone through the ice on the pond both last winter and the winter before even after borings had indicated it was safe. Reeve Plaxton reported he! had seen a small boy fall through the ice on the mill pond about three weeks ago. The pond Is used extensively for skating, the reeve noted. after school, and weekends“ It is I wonderful asset to the town. he claimed, but the sign “Dangerâ€" thin iceâ€"~Do not use". erected by the works department is still in place. The sign should mean something, he maintained. Mr. Scudds reported that con-‘ ditions would remain had until Thursday. “It is hoped work on the sewer will be completed by Thursday night," he stated. “If it is not, the contractor has been instructed totill in the holes so traffic may proceed normally on the weekend. He then would complete the work the beginning of next week." Mill Pond." Coming Events blARHNG “ME - 8P.M. Kap-i uskasing‘tops the list with a percentage of 14 and is justly proud of this figure. This course will be open to any member of the public as well as industrial representa- tives.
