February, 7 about 8:15 p.m. Police have charged Victor Lane, 40. of 7 Church Street 5. with failing to remain at the scene of an accident, and failing to notify the department of highways about a change in address. The accident occurred at Crosby Avenue and Yonge Street when the Lane car alle- gedly ran into the rear of a car driven by George Moseley, 50, of 253 South Taylor Mills Drive, Richmond Hill, after the latter had slowed down in a line of traffic. The impact sent his car into the back of a veh- icle driven by George Morri- son, 44, of Gravenhurst. Total damage to the three cars was estimated at $700. Drinking UnderE iAge Brings Fines: Consuming liquor while un- der age brought fines to four youths, who appeared in mag-. istrate‘s court last week. In view of the high incidence. of rabies in wild animals in' neighboring communities, Mr. Ryan warns that he will sum- mons without warning the own- ers of every dog caught run- ning at large. The canine con- trol officer explains this action is necessary for the protection of the dog owners and particu- larly of children. A report from Etobicoke last week that police have been orâ€" dered to shoot every skunk seen. to prevent the spread of rabies. and recent all-out efâ€" forts to wipe out the skunk pop- ulation in the Whitby-Oshawa area have convinced Mr. Ryan portions of a fence each ad- joining property owner is re:' quired to build. keep up and Owners I that rigid enforcement of can-i ine control is essential at the. present time. The Etobicoke re- port. said that several dead skunks had been found. which on examination. proved to have, died from rabies. Mr. Ryan reported see- ing live skunks in fields near 18th Avenue, Markham Township. one day last week. He explained that this was a most unusual sight on a bitterly cold win- ter‘s day. Although skunks do not hibernate they do sleep during the cold wea- ther. He asks that children be warned to keep away from any skunks which may be seen wan- dering about and report them immediately to Canine Control or to municipal police. The tel- ephone number of the former is 285-1081. A request for the improve- ment of Willis Road in Pine Grove was turned down at Mon- day's Vaughan Township Coun- cil meeting. The road committee report- ed that the first 560 feet of the road is 66 feet wide, for the remaining 430 feet it is only 33 feet, but at one section it is only 15 feet wide. At one point a house has been built partly on the road allowance. It was stated too that the topography would make it very difficult to make any major changes on the road bed. (The road is on a very steep hill). The road is shown on a plan registered in 1931 and the area was originally developed for summer residences for which purpose the road had been felt adequate at the time. Now how- ever, the homes are occupied all year round. In 1951 the roads in the area were graded, drained and gra- vellcd on a local improvement basis. “The township now main- tains this road in the same way as it does any other subdivision road." the report stated. "If the rest of the roads areIr maintained the same as Willis! Road, they're in very poor con- dition,†stated a resident of the street, Murray Morrison‘ who had made the request for improvement. Mr. Morrison in- Ratepayers Told Road Work Must Be On Local Improvement Basis local improvement basis but the proposals had been turned down by the property owners concerned. Council declined to take any further action until Mr. Rys-Sedzicki could show them that a sufficient per- centage of property own- ers were willing to partici- pate in a local improvement scheme. A request from L. De Profic- of 178 Crestwood Road for the installation of street lights on Crestwood Road had been made. The Ontario Hydro Electric Power Commission has been , asked to prepare an estimate of, the cost of this. The possibility of the install- ation of stop signs on Crest- wood Road to prevent speeding by through traffic was also dis- cussed. It was pointed out that the intersections on Crestwood Road were in reality only at road allowances and that for this reason there was little likelihood that permission for the erection of stop signs would be given by the Department of Highways who has jurisdiction. in such matters. Council agreed to have the police department check on the parking of cars at Chapman's’ Garage at Gamble Avenue and Highway 7.
