Once again Canadian prestige in hockey has suffered what can only be called a damagling body blow. The recent world hockey championships have only proved that our penny pinching, arrogant ap- proach to the whole affair has added yet another stain to our once shiny escutcheon and brought no measure of honor to our new flag. Better the team should have stayed at home. Just how we can justify throwing a group together and calling it a team in the space of a few short weeks defies the imagination. Are we so confident of the natural supremacy and abil- ity of Canadian born hockey players that they don’t need endless months of practice as a unit? Evidently we are because that's exactly the way in which we operate! If we are this confident then the humiliating (and there’s really no other word for it) eight to nothing defeat at the hands of Czechoslovakia should reduce the sweat bands of our hats comsiderably. Of course a lot of people will say it’s why a game and what does it really matter? It matters to this extent that in Europe they take this affair seriously. That is evident from the results alone. ‘All other competing countries strive to ice the best team that it is humanly possible to put together while we are content to go with what can only be called a pickup unit. it would seem to indicate that we regard the hockey championships as a bit of a farce.
