Stella Mackie's job was to type stock records and gen- eral office records also to take ried on the office work in- cluding the billing for some ten years until a second girl was hired. When Miss Mackie com- menced her service, the staff consisted of one clerk, a fore- man and four linemen, with D. M. Chamney, as rural sup- erintendent, serving nearly 900 customers. The rural power district included Schomberg within its boundaries, as well as a large 'portion of North York Township. It extended to Fairbank on the southwest and to Oriole on the southeast. Rural hydro every- where was being extended alonz with municipal hydro. This growth meant more staff and facilities were required for the rural power district headquar- ters at Richmond Hill. It meant that every two or three years another room was taken over above the dry goods store until in 1948, the entire floor was required. Much Rural Expansion At this time the Ontario Hydro operations were decen- tralized with the formation of regions. L. J. Roy, P. Eng, was appointed area manager for what was now called an operat- ing area instead of the original title rural power district. Mr. Roy succeeded D. M. Chamney who was appointed Toronto and later central regional per- sonnel officer. New Rural Office When she retires Stella Mackie will have many hobbies to occupy her time. She is a fiveâ€"pin bowler also an ardent golfer and belongs to the Up- lands Golf and Country Club at Thornhill. She also enjoys gardening. Photography and travel are two other hobbies that blend together and she is keen on seeing new sights. Over the years she has visited such places as the British Isles, Eumpegv Californiacami Florida. Hawaii and Alaska, . and of course, she has crossed Canada from coast to coast. With all these interests. Stella Mackie will have no dif- ficulty in keeping busy. But she wistfully observes that there is one thing she will miss a great deal â€" the day to day contacts with “the wonderful folks in Hydro". 'However, as she has been a member of the commis- sion’s quarter century club since 1950 and this year quali- fies for 'the distinguished forty year group, she will‘have regu- lar annual reunions with her many. long-time friends through this association and an'onpor- (unity 'to‘ keep in touch through the retired members‘ organiza- tions.
