They are now considering the results. which revealed that the two most popular subjects in the public taste are sex and Peyton Place Also in the new names category is the predic- ament of The Vancouver Times which, after six months of publication, is desperately pleading for another $100,000 of operational capital and offering free space to newâ€"or anyâ€"advertisers. New name? The Hard Times. 90 Day Warranty on Part: . . . Which, if ficted upon should make fur quite a party. The Rev. Martin Luther King is calling for a boycott of Alabama products. So what do they make in Alabama? We mean, outside of bombs? . . . And this name changing can be contagious! Let's call it the State of Alabomba. Health Minister Judy LaMarsh told the Com- mons last week that she is considering asking the CBC to remove all cigarette advertising from its programs. . . . Well, “asking” will get her nowhere. But if she finds the right word why stop with cig- arettes? The Toronto Real Estate Board has forbidden its members to bid on calls from municipal author- ities for tenders to appraise properties. A spokes- man for the board says, “It’s like asking surgeons to tender on an operation.” â€" Silly spokesman! If he expects an operation to cost What his medical insur- ance pays, he has to. The Defence Department is scrapping the Mid- Canada Radar Line. . . . It seems that, with the Quebec situation, the department is no longer sure of just where mid-Canada is. Britain’s Prime Minister and France’s President DeGaulle agreed last week to pool production forces on a new high-speed plane but, the report adds, there is still a wide division of feeling between them on many issues. . . . Yes, with that nose in the middle, it would be difficult to see eye to eye. A story from St. Catharines says the Welland Canal opened for navigation last week “but nothing much happened” because of thick ice at the Lake Erie end. However we note that the first boat into the canal from the Lake Ontario end was the Charles Dick with a load of sand . . . presumably for traction. The “No Comment” Cornerâ€" New York’s many-multipled stock tickers have been replaced by automated dial-a-quote equipment. So, before astronauts Grissom and Young could be given a proper ticker-tape parade up Broadway, employees of the city’s public affairs authority had to go through all the bordering buildings to distrib- ute free rolls of the now-obsolete tape . . . And they say automation does away with workers! v Mailers Seat-(fig V'I-‘E-Vlieturnâ€"News Head. To- ronto. The wooden block was raised to ‘full height by pulling on the rope which was then released. allowing the block to fall with a thud on the grain in the hollowed stump. After repeated thump- ings. the grain was ground and ready for use as grist. Before mills were built in‘ Markham and Vaughan Town- ships. the nearest was located at Smith's Creek, now Port Perry. on Lake Scugog. It was no uncommon thing for a pion- eer farmer in this area to walk to that point carrying a bag of grain on his back and returning with the bag of grist. Sometimes. the last few miles of the journey would be made by several farmers together in flat-bottomed scows on the lake. The next pioneer was John Lyons. who came in 1794 and settled on Lot 34. Concession 1, Markham. getting his govern- ment deed in 1796. Millar. Lyons and Kinnear. according to the Doomsday Book. were the earliest of all patentees. Mr. Lyons constructed the dam at Thornhill (Ed. note: On Thornhill Golf Course! and built the first sawmill in Thornhill Golf built the first Vaughan in‘ 1801 During the war of 1812 the Americans. when they invaded Canada. gave the settlers a quantity of agricultural imple- ments belonging to the Cana- dian government. When the' invaders left, a search was‘ made of the district in an effort to reclaim these and many were found on the bottom of Lyons‘ pond where the settlers had consigned them for safe-keping. A story which illustrates the‘ strength of these pioneers has been passed down through the years. A couple of men had filled up a sack with three bushels of grain for gristing and were discussing how it should be transported to the mill. Mrs. Lyons overheard the conversation and laughingly offered to carry it to the mill herself. “If you can carry that bag of wheat to the mill, Mrs. Lyons. you can have it." prom- ised its owner. “Lift it on my shoulder.” the stalwart pioneer woman said. When it had been placed on her shoulder, she marched off with her burden, ‘carried it almost a mile to the mill, and there claimed it for her own. Such women and such men. men and women of bone. sinew, and pluck are the ones who laid the foundation of our civilization in this district. Recipients of old age assistance may apply to their regional welfare office, or to the Director, Wel- fare Branch, Department of Public Welfare, Queen’s Park, Toronto. They may also be eligible without making a separate application for free med- ical care, with the choice of their own doctor, and for free standard ward hospital insurance. Of 24,000 recipients, 20,600 receive the medical and hospital benefits. They may also apply to their municipal welfare office for an additional $20 a month in gen- eral welfare assistance to meet the high cost of cerâ€" tain necessities. , . .a 4. I, Uu If you are married, the total income received by you and your wife including your pension or pensions must not exceed $2,220 a year. Part of a person’s “liquid assets” and real estate holdings are counted as net income. Liquid assets are cash, bank accounts, stocks, bonds, securities. the face value of mortgages receivable and the cash surrender value of insurance policies if the cash surrender value exceeds $500. To find out the net income of your liquid assets, total them up and if you are single, subtract $1,000 and if married $2,000. If there is anything left divide it by five. To find out the income value of your real estate find out the assessed value of your property and divide it by 20. According to this formula 21 house assessed at $4,000 would have an income value of only $200. If a person’s a vorlnnpd nension as “income” is high, he may still get long as the income and pension Women who fall in the above categories may get the allowance only if they have lived in Ontario one year. Recipients are allowed a total income of no more than $1,260 a year including their widows’ allowance. That means they can earn no more than $360 a year or $30 a month in outside income. Recipients may have liquid assets up to 31,000. If they have any more. they can't get the allowance. Liquid assets are cash. bank accounts, stocks, bonds and securities. If you are married the same restric- tions apply on your husband‘s liquid assets. A person receiving a widows‘ allowance will automatically be c0vered by a medical and hospital plan. That is, she will be able to go to the doctor of her choice . . . if he has agreed to work under the plan . . '. and her doctor bills will be paid for home and office visits. Her hospital coverage will be the same as all other residents of Ontario are entitled to . . . except she will have to pay no premiums. A major pitfall here is that all elderly pensioners getting hospital coverage are entitled to standard ward only. If they accept semi-private or private care. the hospital care insurance plan will not pro- vide hospital coverage. even if the patient winds up in semi-private through some hospital mistake. The only exception is where it is medically necessary for the person to get semi-private or private treat- ment. Under a recent amendment. women receiving widows’ allowances may apply to their municipal- ities for an additional $20 a month in general welfare to defray the cost of high rent or drug bills or other expensive necessities. This is Ontario’s old age pension scheme to give assistance to needy persons between 65 and 69 . . . that is until they qualify automatically for the federal old age pension. Some 24,000 persons now receive this assistance. There is a residential requirement: you have to live in Canada 10 years continually before you apply. If you lived outside Canada at any time during the past ten years, then you may still be eligible if you lived in Canada prior to 1953 and your previous residence was at least twice as long as your absence. A person receiving the assistance will be out off if he moves outside Canada, but if reinstated on his return. will get up to five months' allowances for the time he was away. Old age assistance may be transferred to any other province in Canada. A person living outside Canada who has ten years res- idential credit according to the above formula, may be eligible the moment he returns. To apply for this assistance. write to the De- partment of Public Welfare, Queen’s Park, Toronto. A field worker will be sent to your home to interview you. If there are delays, you may get up to four months in back allowances from the date of your applications. And don't delay applving because you lack a birth certificate. The department will take all steps to verify your age, even if it means writing overseas for birth and baptismal certificates or other records. vuuy. vav- v... There are limitations on “net” income and assets as follows: if you are single you may take in up to $1,260 a year including your pension. That is you may earn only $360 a year or $30 a month in outside income. A _ If a person’s “income” is high, he me a reduced pension as long as the income a' add up to the maximum mentioned above L~_.- fl- All this means that you bank, bonds and own a house for old age assistanqe. This is the federal “universal old age pension” given automatically to all established Canadian res- idents, regardless of their income or assets. when they reach 70 and the pension is $75 a month. To receive the pension, a person has to have a total of 10 years residence in Canada. If he has ever lived outside Canada, he may qualify under the residential formula mentioned above. But he must live in Canada one full year immediately before receiving the pension. You can take your pension with you if you go to live in another country if you have 25 years of Canadian residence past the age of 21. A pensioner is entitled to seek an additional $20 a month assistance by applying to his municipal wel- fare office. , . . ,_____-_..U- and, Iare Olllce. He is entitled to the Ontario government’s med- ical and hospital coverage for himself only if he meets these conditions. If single, widowed. separ- ated or divorced, his income does not exceed $1,260 a year, including his pension, and his liquid assets do not exceed $1.500. If married, his income and that of his wife do not exceed $2,220 a year, including a pension or men- sions. and their liquid assets donot exceed 51,500. .i _.
