Risen Christ. may hear him say to us as He did to Rambling Around (Continued from Page 2) victorious over death. But it also meant that lie was alive. that He was with them in all His wond- rous love and mercy and power. May this conviction come home to us on Easter Day. as it did to John Vliesley. For years. he had been a cultured. con- suentious clergyman, taking his religion far more seriotislytliaii many Of us do. But the victory of Easter did not become real to him until that night when he met the living Christ and said: “I felt. I did trust in Christ. Christ alone. for salvation." Wesley had known this for years. but it was only then that he began to live it. it was only then that he received what the New 'l‘estament calls life and went out. like a blazing torch lit at the altar of God. to set all England on fire. We may enter Into Communion with liim and know all the comiort and strength Of His Presence. '1 close this Easter message with Dr. John Bon- nells description of what happened at the funeral of a great Christian clergyman. Rev. H. B. Meyer. “Al the close Of the service. the congregation rose and stood In silence. waiting to hear the throbbing dirge ‘of the Dead March from Saul. Instead the organist swung into the Hallelujah Chorus and played It With full organ. How fitting it was. for a great servant of Christ was standing at attention before his King." _ May we too stand at attention before our King this Easter. and respond to His “Good Morning" by making him King in our lives! A blessed Easter to you all! Rev. H. Reginald Howden, B.A., L.Th ‘ The whole world is changing rapidly. New ideas and concepts and material goods are being pressed upon us all before we can get a chance to aSSimIlate them and understand them. The church changes too. but it will also stand firm. “The church is called to serve Christ. in the world and the service begins at its home base. the community.“ said Mr. Howden. rector of Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Thornhill. “Furthermore It IS called to provide spiritual and moral leadership and to reach out in loving service in the name of Christ to the community.” Mr. Howden said that. for example, there was a new frontier in the church’s ministry to older people. This means encouraging and supporting the senior Citizens. It means looking into the whole matter of proper housing for them. t On the other hand. Mr. Howden said that he did not consider the church separate from the lay people as Pierre Berton seemed to suggest in “The Comfortable Pew." r “Lay people are called to do more than odd jobs. They are urged to take an active responsible part in the service Of Christ’s ministry. working Shoulder to shoulder with the clergy." The Rev. Howden is entering his fifth year as the rector of Holy Trinity. One of his former par- ishes was the Parish of St. John the Baptist, at Lake- field. He was also the chaplain and master of the Lakefield Preparatory School for boys. He was the rector of Trinity Church. Barrie for seven years. Five years were spent in ministering to 1200 people from the Church of St. Michael’s and All Angels, Toronto. He is a graduate of Trinity College in theology. Besides his very active ministry. Mr. Howden serves the church in other ways. He is a member of the executive committee of the Diocese of Toronto: Viceâ€"chairman of the Diocesan Board Of Christian Education: Director of the church army and presi- dent Of the York Central Ministerial Association. Mr. Howden is blessed in having a progressively minded family. His wife. Edith, is a lawyer.
