In the afternoon, the students assembled around the 7040 computer, used mainly for fa~ culty and graduate student re- search. Mr. Cress demonstrated the working parts and the meth- od connecting the 7040 comput- er with a 1401. In the first lecture Paul Cress, a representative‘of the comput- er centre, illustrated the meth- od of programming IBM cards to feed the 1620 computer. The lecture was followed by a “Problems Solving Session", during which the visiting stu~ dents were allowed to program problems on the function of a} variable. This task demanded1 perfection. since a misâ€"spelling‘ or a missing decimal point on a} card, would cancel the program‘ and the computer would answer! “Error in statement . . . . This interest was furthered by art instruc- tion of Principal Jim Stewart of Richmond High School. Mr. Howarth's interest in the field of active art is more recent. Along with his sense for detail and accuracy he has developed. a sensitive free brush.
