A car carrying two members of a Que- bec singing group, headinrz for London for an engagement, crossed the median and col- lided head-on with Mr. Mc- Chesney’s eastbound car. Both the singers, Micheline Desanre, 23, of Ville St. Michel and Claudette Faubert, 23, of La- chine, Quebec were also killed instantly. Mr. Hook is currently collab- orating with a committee on the preparation of the first textbook on horticulture to be used in Ontario schools and will also illustrate the book. The following article on care of lawns was written by him for the Richmond Hill Horticul- ‘tural Society. Lawns naturally require cer- tain basic maintenance if some- thing more ornamental than a sheep pasture is desired. The absurdly simple operations fol- lowed in most parks are often overlooked at home. Throughout the winter, twigs, stones, paper and other particles have accumulated in lawns. These must be thor- oughly raked off with a fan rake. If these are not removed they will be forced into the soil. hampering the formation; of a smooth sward. This should be followed by rolling. If the soil is wet, and of a clay nature, even a light roller will press the earth into a state that will become brick hard upon drying. Remember, the purpose of rolling is to force frost-heaved turf back into contact with the soil. The filling of small depressions is not accomplished by rolling but should be done by top dressing: with a rich loam. Fertilizing with a recognized turf fertilizer. such as 10â€"6-4. or 7-7â€"7 is ideal at this time. Follow the manufacturer's di- rections. but if too much is applied. water heavily. All sizes above 24" diameter, other gauges, arch or special pipe will be priced by the works commissioner's ofiice. Hourly rates for private work charges by the works depart- ment for 1965 were approved as: (overtime charges in brack- ets) Foreman $3.14 ($4.68), sub foreman $2.97 ($4.40), laborer $2.80 ($4.24). probationary lab- orer $2 ($3.70). These rates. it was noted. take care of wages, fringe benefits and a little over- head. The works commissioner was authorized to ask for tenders for the supply and delivery of: two half-ton pickup trucks and one station wagon. Since only two firms provide the necessary services, the commissioner was .also authorized to secure invita- tional quotations for tanker Dumping and cleaning of catch basins. Fertilizing with a recognized turf fertilizer, such as 10-6-4 or 7-7-7 is ideal at this time. Follow the manufacturer’s di- rections, but if too much is applied. water heavily. De- activated sewage, such as Mil- organite will not burn so ex- cesses are of relatively little danger. The European Chafer in the Niagara Peninsula, and the June Beetle in this area may have left large brown areas in the lawn. Do not spray at this One of the champion jumpers to be shown at the Richmond Hill Fair May 14 and 15 will be “Johnny Canuck”, owned by Sunnybrook Riding Club. He is shown above, ridden by Jim Elder at the 1964 Royal Winter Fair where he was the star of the Canadian equestrian team. He has also been CHSA Zone 2 jumper champion for the last two yearS. Mr. McChesney is an executive with the Royal Bank of Canada and was to have taken part in the ceremonies at the opening of the new Royal Bank Building in' Toronto on the day of his son’s dehth. Mr. McChesney is survived by his parents, and two sisters, Mary Ellen and Patricia, stu- dents at Langstaff Secondary School. Requiem mass was sung in St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church, Thornhfll on Wednes- day with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery. time because the larvae are normally too deep to be effect- ively destroyed. Merely rake off as much of the dead grass as possible so any remaining shoots may grow readily. Reduction in the charge schedule for the supply and in- stallation of private standard corrugated iron culvert pipe‘ was approved by Richmond Hill Town Council Monday evening. Fifteen inch diameter cul- verts, 20 feet in length, will now cost $66 (a reduction of $12): 18" diameter $75 (reduc- tion $9): 21" $85 (reduction $9); and 24” $96 (reduction $11). Fungus damage is unlikely. If it is suspected however, rake the areas thoroughly and use a sulphur-based lawn herbicide, again, according to manufac- turer’s directions. Hourly rates for private work charges by the works depart- ment for 1965 were approved as: (overtime charges in brack- ets) Foreman $3.14 ($4.68), sub foreman $2.97 ($4.40), laborer $2.80 ($4.24), probationary lab- orer $2 ($3.70).
