VAUGHAN TOWNSHIP. Mrs. W. O. Stockdale 884-4101 VICTORIAN ORDER OF NURSES RICHMOND HILL BRANCH At The Sound of The Gong Your Answer Is Wrongâ€" Greek university students have been discovered to be cheating on their exams with tiny radios tuned to an out-of-class transmitter giving the answers. This is one time when the Japanese have the word for it . . . transistors. And a Centennial project bulletin from Can- ada's Industry Department lists a new-style bed-pan as a wanted product. . . . A Centennial bedpan? Man, wouldn't THAT_be a crazy case of constipation? Prime Minister Pearson has been selected as this year’s world-winner of the “Family of Man" award. The presentation is to be made in New York on November 17 . . . which would make it rather awkward for him if he happens to be disowned by the Canadian branch of the family on November 8. And we see where President Sukarno is having a little trouble with the Indonesian branch of the family. For him, it was something of a change-of- name to Outdonesia. . In Canada, cheating is not so likely, as enlarged university accommodation brings talk of lowering pass standards to 50 per cent. But somehow. we kind of lose our trust in a world of the future where our trains and planes and bridges and buildings will be designed by engineers who are 50 per cent wrong. Our Quote Of The Weekâ€" , “It's a sin how people on welfare are looked down on. I’ve always paid my rent on film and there’s nothing wrong with being on welfare. There’s security in welfare but some people don’t believe it." The Ontario Government Trade Crusade adver- tises that the example of satellites made in Ontario “proves that good old-fashioned know-how isn't limited to you-know-who” . . . Yes, we know whoâ€"â€" but we don't know why! Why, that is, if these satellites were made in Ontario, they were called Alouettes? We like India's description of its intention to build an A-bomb as being for “peaceful purposes" . . . because â€"â€" on second thought â€"- it should in- fluence Red China to look at it that way, too. SAO PAULO â€"-â€" (Reuters) â€" Quadruplels. three girls and a boy were born here Wednesday to Brigida Daddato, 24. wife of a 27-year-old trans- port worker. . . . And she did it the hard way â€" no hormones! With subsidized housing being so much in the unsubsidized public eye, we offer this opinion of a. He becomes available for adop- tion. (3) A non-ward. This results from a temp- orary situation where relatives are to be traced, or in cases where one or both parents need time to get on their feet after a temporary setback. These are cases of misfortune rather than neglect. The CAS operates children’s receiving homes. and there are charitable institutions for temporary care. but the orphanage is a thing of the past, and under normal conditions the society makes an effort to place a child immediately in a foster home. The (7A8 is always in need of foster parents who can care for children in a normal family setting. (‘nuples interested should get in touch with the CAS head office of the branch in their area. In York County. it would he The Children’s Aid Society lo- cated in the county buildings, Newmarket. Group Homes There are many older children who do not fit into the intimate family setting of a boarding home. Many have been shifted from one home to another all their lives and find it difficult to achieve any kind of warm relationship with ever changing foster par- ents. The CAS feels they should be among other children with similar backgrounds. but wants to avoid placing them in an institution. One solution Religious barriers mean little in private adopt: tions. It is up to the father, or if he is not known or available, the mother, to decide the religion of the child. If responsible parents consent to cross relig- ious lines and the adoptive parents agree. there is no legal barrier. To arrange a private adoption, the natural parent should get in touch with a lawyer who will look after the details. The lawyer may charge a fee for his services, but it is against the law for anyone to accept or make any kind of payment for the exchange of a child. 7_ The CAS pays from $40 to $60 a month for normal care depending on the individual child. In addition all clothing, medical care and special needs of the child are provided by the CAS. Infant boarding hnmes must be registered and approved by the local or county health department. An interview is arranged before a child is placed. Foster parents or the CAS are free to end the arrangement at any time. The Department of Public Welfare acts as a clearing house in adoption cases for the 55 Children’s Aid Societies. This is particularly useful in the adop- tion of hard-to-place children, those who are older, racially mixed or handicapped. in special cases. where extra attention is needed, as in the case of a frail infant, payment may be higher. The (TAS insists that the foster parents he married couples who should be able to provide a bed for each child. is the group home. This is where a couple with enough space will take in a. group of six. usually older children. The CAS is also seeking group homes for children who require special care. Catholic CAS in three cities, Toronto: Hamilton and Windsor. Anywhere else, one should apply in the area of residence. If you want to adopt a child, the best way to get things rolling is to get in touch with your Children’s Aid Society. The Protestant CAS is forbidden by law to place a child in a Roman Catholic home. Jew. ish parents may apply to the Protestant CAS. There is no religious barrier there. Roman Catholic pro spective parents should work through the Roma}; Adoption About 90 percent of all adoptions are handled by CAS. The remainder are arranged privately through lawyers and doctors and most of these are children related to the adoptive parents. But the CAS is brought into the picture on all adoptions handled in the province. As the provincial govern- ments agent, its job is to recommend to the court in favor or against each adoption before it becomes final. emporary ward. A temporary wardship is 0 two years.
