Richmond Hill Fire Chief Alfred Stung said this week in listing some of the seasonal precautions to be taken around the home in matters of fire safety. Chief Stong said for the mast‘ part Richmond Hill had been relatively free of serious fires during the Christmas season,l but. with more and more homes: adding to their stock of electrio cal fixtures. it increased the} possibility of this danger. I In the matter of Christmas tree lights in the home. Mr.» Stong said three strings of' lights on one fuse was the maxi-1 mum for safety. The tree itself should be cut at an angle at the but to help it absorb water, and should be placed in an} area so as not to block access. to any doors or windows in the 1 event of an emergency. ‘ ' Christmas tree’ngms should not be left on when away from the house, or in the unattended presence of young children. They should also be switched off when going to bed. The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office. in a special bulletin, also lists several other precautions to be observed in keeping Christmas free of fire. Among these are the check- ing of insulation on lizhting strings for damage. and buying only CSA approved lights. The bulletin also warns against smoking too near the trees and advises decorating them with non-flammable mat- erials only. All exmra precautions should be taken, but as Chief Stong says, most of all, common sense should prevail. Gift wrappings should be cleared away promptly from the tree area, and the tree stand should be filled regularly with water. Besides giving motorists a Christmas present, the town uses the period to overhaul the meters. Amnesty Granted To Town Drivers Just to put down any rumors that might pop up, Richmond Hill Town Council and not low- flying airplanes are respons- ible for all those headless park- ing meters along Yonge Street. Caught up in the Christmas spirit, council has granted mot- orists their usual amnesty this time of year from paying for the privileges of parking along the main thoroughfare by haul- ing in all the metal heads. Last Week council passed the resolution providing free park- ing until January 7. Council has been playing San- ta this way every year since the meters were installed five years go.
