8 Gflt Pups Need‘ Senous Thought Canine Control Officer James Ryan asks that parents be ab- solutely certain that the family" wants a dog. will take care of a pet and will not tire of it in a few weeks. before yielding to impulse buying. There is some» thing about a cute little bundle of fur as a Christmas gift for a child that is irresistablc. If children are under six years of age, Mr. Ryan advises that a toy dog that can be thrown around, neglected and abused and discarded when the novelty wears off, is a better buy for the fond parent to make. For those parents who have given the acquisition of a famin pet serious thought and have reached the conclusion that, their family is not complete} without a dog, Mr. Ryan has at further word of advice. “Always,l purchase a dog from a reputable; dealer. from a registered kennel‘r or from the humane soeiety.”i he advises. “Then. if it is not satisfactory. you have some re~ course. If you buy from an un~ registered dealer, at a roadside or market stand. where unpro- tected puppies are offered fort sale, you are buying trouble." I Mr. Ryan speaks from expei'i~. ence. He knows that a few weeksl after Christmas every year hunâ€"' dreds of little dogs start appear-l ing on the roads and he is calledi to pick them up. Many of these1 animals are suffering because: of the impulsive buying of live; Christmas presents. he states.‘ This year. with rabies rampant in the area, these Wanderers are potential victims of the diseasei and may spread it to kind-‘ hearted humans who pick them- up and fondle them. “Unless you have given seri~ ous thought to all that a pet in; the home entails. and plan to give it loving care, then please: don't give your child a puppy for a Christmas gift," Mr. Ryan" pleads. r Richvale News Correspondent: Mrs. Anne White. 24 Roosgelt Drive 889-3806 l Library Some weeks ago I reported in this column that the Richvale Library would open about De- cember 15. I have been in con- tact with the chairman of the township library board and find that it will not open until some time in January. Books started to come into the new building December 5 and a committee of women is working furiously to, enable the earliest possible opening. Being a pioneer library a great deal of work is still to; be done before opening date. ' Watch this column for the definite date and time. Miss Alice Burnett will be the librarian in charge at thisI branch. ' Anyone who wishes to donate books to the library or who has any interesting ideas the com. mittee could use is asked to contact Mrs. R. Decent at 889~ 7145. It will be most appreci-. ated. A special project has been taken up by the children 01' the; Sunday school.
