July 8th, 1967 at 2 pm at St. Mary‘s Anglican Church, Richmond A further tribute must be paid to Mr. Owen as the design- er of the unique and effective sets for the play. The stage is bisected at an angle from right to left by a gauze screen. With the light on this. the back of the stage is rendered invisible while Emile relates his story directly to the audience. The rear por- tion of the stage is also divided in two parts and with the draw- ing back of the black curtain on either side and having the sec- tion lit up, the action was quite visible there through the gauze screen. This permitted a quick transition from Emile‘s place of business to his home as he casu- Hill A tour de force and a triumph are the words that come first to mind in discussing the Cur- tain Club's current attraction, “The Egg". On stage throughout the entire two and a half hours of the produc- tion. Mr. Owen also performed the difficult feat of talking dir- ectly to the audience for much of the evening. without becom- ing coy, giving the audience a fine sense of involvement and participation. The bit of busi- ness for instance where he stop- ped the action to ask the house manager for a drink of water seemed perfectly natural and the audience was quite in sym- pathy with his comment “You’d get thirsty too!" It is to be hoped however. that before any more perform- ances. someone will take down the gauze curtain and either iron the wrinkles out of it or stretch it taut and smooth. None of the other 31 roles in the play approached that of Emile in either length or depth. but many members of the cast played two or three roles and are to be complimented on the fact that this was for the most part, only clear by a careful study of the program. Ron Solloway, for instance. appeared successively as a doc- tor much sicker than his patient, a speechless customer. the fi- ance of one of the sisters of Emile's wife and as the wife's lover. In this latter role, he successfully portrayed a timid lover who eventually becomes completely frustrated as Emile’s machinations lead to his being accused of murder. The only point on which it was possible to fault Mr. Owen’s performance in any way was in the quality of his voice which. when ‘he raised it. sounded somewhat strained and thin. The play takes place in Paris and in it Emile relates the story of his attempts to be accepted, to become part of the system. to enter “The Egg" where the rest of society appears to be warmly ensconced, leaving him on the outside. While his meth- ods of doing this are outrageous and culminate in his engineer« ing the arrest and presumable conviction of his wife‘s lover for her murder (which Emile had himself committed) it is surely a tribute to Mr. Owen’s skill that the audience remains sympathetic to him throughout. Much of the play's success may of course be attributed to the obviously able direction of Dagmar Ma-tyas. One of the few who played a single role was Anita Steiner and she shone in the compara- tively small part as Rose, a blase and matter-of~fact prosti- tute. Four small roles were nicely filled by Fred Bannon and he was at his best as Uncle Al- phonse. Special mention should also be made of George Young in three small roles. particu- larly in the last one of the pro- secutor. “WW-FOX ileum.
