Barbara. Mr. Lanigan said the quar- tet was heading into shore from the middle of the lake when they ran into some rough water which started to pour in until the boat went down. He was réscued from the water after clinging to the boat for nearly three hours after the incident. The three men. along with Gordon Lanigan, 47, of Scar- boro, brother-inslaw of Mr. Brown Sn, were thrown into the water when their boat was swamped while they were fish- ing Saturday. Mr. Lanigan, the only one who wasn’t wearing a life jacket, was also the only one who escaped. Police have recovered thei body of Richmond Hill resident, Ross Brown, 25, of 205 Beechy Drive, from Rice Lake, near Peterboro, but have still to lo- cate the body of his father, Horace A. Brown, of Toronto, and another man, Max Barrett, 26, of Scarboro. I The grade 8 prepared speech competition was held in Febru- ary in co-operation w1th the separate schools, to provide a representative for the town in the York County competition. Gerald C a s t e l 1 o, Crosby Heights Senior School received the Vice-Principals‘ and Assist- ant Principals’ Trophy for the best grade 7 impromptu speech. The trophy was presented by Vice-Chairman Jack Knott. The best prepared speech for a grade 7 pupil was delivered by Barbara Pierce of Crosby Heights Senior School. The award for this was the Floyd Perkins Shield which was pre- sented by Trustee Deena Simp- son. Thirty-five pupils from the Richmond Hill Public School system competed in public speaking contests in five schools Thursday afternoon. Prepared speeches for grades 4, 5. 6 and 7 pupils were heard in Beverley Acres and MacKillop Schools, and impromptu speeches Were heard in McConaghy, Pleasant- ville and Walter Scott Schools. Kathy Hicks of Pleasantville School was presented with the Harold Mills Trophy by Trustee Phyllis Hawkes for the best im- promptu speech oy a pupil of grades 4, 5 and 6. Jennifer Hunter, of MacKillop School was presented with the Home and School Association Trophy for the best prepared speech in grades 4, 5 and 6, by Trustee Charles Wortman. The best impromptu speech by a grade 8 pupil was given by Denise Ruttle, MacKillop School. She received the Drs. Langstaff Trophy, which was presented by Superintendent Gordon McIntyre. The 1812 coin has the figure of justice, complete with blind- fold and scales on one side, while the other side is obliter- ated. TORONTO: William James Pyke last week was sentenced to‘ five years in jail by a 12-man jury for assaulting and robbing Douglas Moorehead of Newmar- ket last May. Evidence showed the two struck up a conversa- tion in the Glenville Dairy Bar and then left the place together. While walking on Charles‘ Street, Pyke knocked down the complainant and stole his wal- let containing more than $100. MARKHAM VILLAGE: Sixâ€" year-old John Ireland suffered burns to to his neck when a companion placed a lighted fire- cracker under his clothing. The village has a bylaw which for- bids discharge of fireworks without a permit from the police department. A person over 18 years of age must be present. PINE ORCHARD: Complaining that inadequate instruction was being provided in the local pub- lic school, Mr. and Mrs. William McAdam took their daughter out of school. They have been charged with keeping their daughter out of school by the school attendance officer. The case has been adjourned until June 2 in Family Court, New- market. AURORA: Salary increases rang- ing from a minimum of $800 a year have been settled between teachers in the public school and the board. The minimum salary in category 1 will be rais- ed from $3,700 to $4,500 in Sep- tember. Six annual increments of $300 and one of $100 are also provided in this category. Ne~ gotiations are still being carried on by the district high school board and its teaching staff.
