'Order Came To Canada In I828 The founding of the Orange Order in England goes back to 1688 when William Of Orange and his Wife Mary as- cended to the throne. Three years later. at the Battle of the Boyne. Protestant William defeated his Roman Catholic father-inâ€"law James II of Eng- land (James VIII of Scotland). James had fled the throne when William and Mary were invited to take over the mon- archy. The battle decided for ever that the English monarchy would be Protestant. The Orange Order came to Canada in 1828 brought by Ogle R. Gowan to strengthen the Protestant faith and pro- vide a medium for British con- nection wherever British sub- jects were to be found. There had been lodges in Canada as early as 1812 and 1814, but it was not until Gowan’s arrival that the order took form as an organization. When William Lyon Macken- zie stirred up the rebellion of 1837 Orangemen turned out to defend the established order of government. Gowan, :himself, was wounded three times at the Battle of the Windmill near Prescott. After this up- rising, Orangemen were among those who advocated confedera- tion and protection for Canad- ian industries, and continued CAMPBELL â€" Flying Officer Guy Campbell and Mrs. Campbell (nee Sharon Lang) are happy to announce the arrival of their son, Scott Jeffery Michael, 61/2 1bs., July 16, 1967 at Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.
