Bork's Jewellers Started In 1959 Open New Store Today. (Thursday), as they officially open their new store at the corner of Yonge Street and Lorne Avenue (formerly Clarke's Pharmacy). Bork’s Jew- ellers realize an eight year am- bition. It was eight years ago that Julius Bork, an accomplishedl Watchmaker, first opened a small watch repair shop in his home at 88 Yonge Street South. Satisfied customers, appreciat- ing the excellence of his work. returned time and time again and brought their friends. so that the business prospered. Gradually Mr. Bork, assisted by his wife. added a stock of watches and other jewellery items. and two years ago hired another watch repairer. Sam Knights. a local man, who is still with them. At times it has also been necessary for them to add a part time watch repairer to the staff. A three-day official opening at their new store at 49 Yonge Street South, with free gifts for children and adults, beginning at 10 am today. marks the suc- cessful achievement of their project for Centennial Year. a new store. Mr. Bork was born in Quebec. his wife in Pembroke. They Were married 26 years ago in Ottawa. Their first store was established in Merrickville, where one of their customers was the multi-millionaire, the late Harry McLean (Mister Xi whose eccentric habit of tossing away $10 bills will long be re- membered. After fire destroyed their store, Mr. Bork worked for a time in Ottawa. Realizing that the concentration of industry in the Toronto area would offer greater opportunities to the family of five boys, they moved to this area and for four years lived in the frame farm house on what is now Pioneer Vil- lage. For a time Mr. Bork made precision instrument repairs at York Gears and then transfer- red to A. V.‘ Roe at MaltOn where he made precision parts for the ill-fated “Arrow”. When that project was abandoned eight years ago by the Diefenbaker Government and the men laid off, Mr. Bork decided to do watch repairing again. He had moved to Rich- mond Hill in 1957. The Borks‘ five sons are Gary. Ray and Roy (the twins), John and Willis. The first three are already established in the business world and John is SEN-i ousiy thinking of attending the Institute of Trades to take the wavtchmakers‘ course on com- pletion of secondary school this year. His hope is to then serve his apprenticeship under his father and assist in the busi- ness. Watch repairer Sam Knights, whose work is also of high cali- bre. is a resident of Richmond Hill. He received his training under the DVA program 20 years ago and has proved an in- valuable addition to the busi- ness in the last two years.
