Said Councillor Hoover: “Do the people know what is pro- posed?“ Mr. Crate said all shippers and receivers were notified by letter June 14, but added: “No notice has been placed at the station â€"â€" this is not done until the Board (of Transport) gives authority to put the plan in action." Councillor Allan Sumner ask- ed if all passengers would still be picked up by the CPR, and was assured the same practice as presently used would con- tinue. Councillor Hoover said he'd "like to hear what the people of the area have to say, direct. There would be 24 hour serv- ice, seven days a week, for tel- egrams and death messages. At present there are no facilities for telegrams at the station, and present information on car- load shipments is restricted, council was told. DO PEOPLE KNOW? Reeve Stewart Rumble and Councillor Charles Hoover thought the idea sounded fine for commercial customers, but Mr. Rumble remarked that at the Department of Transport hearing on the same question some years ago “the persons who attended appeared to be persons who waited at the sta- tion for pickup (by earl." There Would also be other small services which the public would find valuable â€" tickets for trains and planes, hotel ac- commodation; locating incoming freight shipments; under the new system freight shipments would come in and payment could be made at a later date through the service centre. There would be toll-free calls through ZEnith numbers; data processing and telecommunica- tions. Under the new arrangement an agent Would cover the area by car. complete with a tele- phone unit, and anyone having difficulty could be reached with- in one hour. The service centre at Agin- court would serve the munici- pality far better than the pres- ent service, said Mr. Crate. The station would remain open as a shelter for passengers with heat probably looked after by the section man. Mr. Crate said. At present the station is open only one hour a day and is re~ garded as a flag station. Last week, Mr. Crate said that, while there wouldn't be any caretaker at Locust Hill under the new setup, Mrs. V. Malcolm, the present caretaker, would be the commissioned ag- ent in the village and would handle express shipments from her home. A similar proposal two years ago by the railroad brought storms of protest from custom- ers using the line, and the plan was dropped for the time. This year, council asked that passengers be advised of the proposed changes and that com- plaints ibe submitted to council within a 10-day period. Last July the CPR announced its intention to withdraw the caretaker from Locust Hill Station. but council asked for more information before con- senting to it. A proposal by Canadian Pac- ific Railways to service all of the Trent Division â€"- which originates in the Trenton area and includes the Locust Hill station in Markham Township â€" through a centre at Agin- court, beginning September 5, was outlined last week to coun- cil by J. F. Crate, superintend- ent of the CPR. He was ac- companied by four other mem- bers of the organization. T. Oosterhuis recently sailed from New York to Holland where the former hopes to con- tinue his studies at the Univer- sity of Amsterdam. On motion of Councillors Sumner and Anthony Roman members agreed to withdraw objections to the proposal for Locust Hill station, and on mo- tion of Councillor Hoover and Deputy-reeve S. J. Gadsby ag- reed to defer decision for ten days. Among other stations slated for changes under the new ser- vice centre system are Wood- bridge. Claremont, Myrtle, Lindsay, Norwood, Bonarlaw, Bala, Orillia and Midhurst. A representative said\ some towns closely associated have made no objections. Deputy-reeve S. J. Gadsby suggested a notice of CPR pro- posals be posted in the station for the public, and any objec- tions be directed to the town- ship clerk by a certain date. Said Mr. Crate: “We will con- sider posting notice of the pro- posed change in service.
