I would like to put school back at the top of the list." Chip feels that the bone of contention be- tween students and the administration is a lack of communication. “We seem to be out of touch with the admin- istration and the board. Rules are made and things happen which we have nerer heard about before and about which we feel we should have some say. Personally. I think it would be a good idea to have student representatives to the board to help determine certain policies which would directly affect the students." As far as plans for the future go. Chip would like to continue his education at university. but at the moment he has no idea of what he would like to study. “All I really do know." he conceded, "is that I would like to do something different.“ A year from now. Jeff would like to begin work in a general arts course. but he’s not yet. sure at what university. After that he plans to go into law. “It’s something I‘ve always wanted to do.” he said. “because a lawyer deals with people and I like dealing with people.” President of Richmond Hill High‘s students’ council this year is 17-year-old (‘hip Martin. who was also born in Toronto. He has spent 16 of his years in Richmond Hill. graduated from Macâ€" Killop School and is presently in grade 12 at RHHS. He has been active in the school in the intramural sports, football. the drama club. the yearbook. and the dance committee. Chip has two aims for his students‘ council: The first, and to him. as a loyal student. the most important one, is to put the name of the school right out in front of it. "At present," he saic, “it is rather obscured." His second aim is to reduce what Chip feels is growing apathy within the school and raise “School Spirit." “1 have a theory about this." he said. “50c- iety has become affluent and where school used to be a centre of interest and activity at all times. it isn‘t anymore. “School is there to educate you, and I don’t think that the discipline should inhibit the form- ation of a person into an individual On the other hand‘ if the administration had no say whatever on dress and behaviour standards. there are always those people who would take advantage of their freedom to go to extremes.” ) “7" “Discipline.’ he replied. dress and behaviour are concerned I asked Jeff what he considers to be the biggest area of antagonism between the students and the administration. Jeff figures that the function of the students‘ council in the school is “to give the students some sort of representation in the administration of school affairs.” And his particular aim this year is “to make school more enjoyable for everybody in it.” As far as high schools go. there is always one on the wrong side of the tracks. It is a virt- ual impossibility for one to admit that the other is better or even just. as good as itself. However this week. I feel I have achieved something his- toric in bringing the students‘ council presidents of Bayview Secondary and Richmond Hill High School together on relatively equal terms. Jeff Parisi is president of students’ council at Bayview Secondary School. He was born 18 years ago in Toronto and has been a resident of Richmond Hill for 16 years. He graduated from L. M. McConaghy School and is working on courses in grade 13 this year.
