14 It‘s confession time again. . . . Oops. another mistake! This time it involved last week’s Rams- Milton game. No. I got the score right. The mistake came when I referred to the Rams as The Jewellers at one point in the story. Of course. they’re not. ” Actually it doesn't hurt at all. I mean getting your left arm chonped off below the knee. Not :{L‘eally of course. Tom Hughes who helps sponsor yigthe Rams. is not really that type of guy. Tom, “way from my arm. riqht now! Aaaaah . . . WIHKKKKIKlflmflfllflfllflkflflfimflmm‘ fivlcaucla n u“ dbblbLb LU ‘ Switzer and Rob McFadden (Continued from Page 13) “Last year.” explains Mr. White. "we handled 7,000 children over a 20-week period with the idea being generally to provide some fun for those who may not want to, may not be able to, play the big sport of minor hockey in The Hill." The whole thing is an additional exercise in what in the old fashioned days of yore you used to indulge in. You know, the 40-minute school period of a little bit of floor hockey, some exercises, etc. Then into the shower. That‘s the idea behind the whole thing and, to date. it has been working out perfectly. Except, of course, that the program has to be limited in numbers but all concerned are hoping that eventually the program will be expanded to take in all and anyone. And sneaking of hockey. The York-Simcoe Senior Hockey League (The Jewellers are in this one and I do mean The Jew- ellers) will be still holding that big Boxing Day game next Tuesday night. Only, woe is me. it won’t ‘be in the new arena . . . but the old one. New one’s Thot ready yet. And it all comes under the. heading of giving youngsters just a little something more to do on those lone‘ winter nights which can be very long even in this supersonic television-age. And, oh by the way, the entire winter program is served up free gratis to the youngsters with the recreation committee forking up 31,800 for equip- ment and a small outlay for the instructors. ~ And don’t forget to cut out that “festive greet- ing" ad to be found on the Sports Page. It will obtain free admission for you to the games on Tuesday evening. Especially those youngsters who may not be interested in minor hockey. or, even if he is. So that's it. Not tremendously spectacular, doesn‘t get a lot of headlines. but it’s doing a pretty important job. Which. after all. really counts. The league: by the way, will continue to have Tuesday night games as always but it will now be having: Sunday games as well in the new town arena. The Rams. yes The Rams. will be reverting to Thursday nights from here on in. MERRY CHRISTMAS! And it looks like the new arena “Christmas Present" will now have to be a “New Year’s” resolu- tion. It looks like it should be finished within two ‘Weeks of 1968. Oh, well. That’s life. DOW And yet. another note to the festive season. The Oak Ridges and District Arena Limited will be holding another dance. All in the future cause of 'a new hockey arena for the area. The occasion this time is New Year's Eve at Our Lady Of The Annunciation Separate School at Oak Ridges. Tickets are $10 per couple. See Treasurer Gordon Achilles for tickets. Oshawa 8 - GFGM 0 Wednesday night the radio kids travelled to Oshawa and met one of the top novice divis- ion clubs in Ontario. Obviously outclassed. the Gentlemen were put down by an 8-0 score. Pos- itional play and man on man checking are the two factors the team must develop in order to compete with topnotch clubs such as Oshawa. Oshawa 8 - CFGM 0 The Gentlemen were down- ed again Friday night by an identical score when they host- ed Oshawa in a return match. The play was a repeat of the previous game. The local lads looked sharp for the first few minutes of play and threat- ened to giVe Oshawa a run for its money. Oshawa changed the complexion of the game by netting three goals within five minutes and never looked back. Bellevllle 4 â€" CFGM 3 Sunday the radio kids trav- elled to Belleville and came away on the short end of a ‘4-3 score. CFGM turned in ione of its best, games to date and despite the score should ihave won easily. Midgets At Orillia Holiday Tournaments Right Winger Bobby Putnam opened the scoring for the loc- als by picking up a loose puck from behind the Belleville goal and putting it past the goal- tender. Defenceman Tommy Mesley picked up an assist on the play. CFGM went ahead 2-0 on a goalmouth scramble, Winger Bob McCullough get- ting the goal, assisted by Dave Berseth and Grant Ferguson. The Belleville squad then scor- ed three straight goals while the Gentlemen let up on their checking game. Defenceman Dave Berseth,l playing a sparkling game, put CFGM back in the picture on a breakaway goal. assisted by Mike Ham. With the score tied‘ 3-3, Belleville got what turned‘ out to be the winning goal. The defensive team of Ham, Bell, Berseth and Mesley looked im- pressive and played a strong checking game. Goalie John Schaap also turned in a cred- itable performance. CFGM will get another crack. at the ‘Belleville team when they play a return game here January 7. Next Thursday the radio kids travel to Bradford for an ex- hibition game with Oak Ridges. Friday at 7 pm they will host the strong Brampton novice club in an exhibition match. North End Cleaners Atoms start Thursday night in the Don Mills Atom Tournament in the Don Mills arena. They are guaranteed at least three games. In Don Mills Tournament ATOMS Monday evening Richmond Hill Lion Peewees travelled to Sutton to play a regular league game. It was the Lions all the way. although it was not one of their better outings. Final score was Richmond Hill 7, South Shore 0. Goal getters were Steve Gor- don and Alan Graham with two each, Tommy Sanlon. Val Steffan and Ricky Sackfield with one each and assists going to Jimmy Clement (2). Terry Rice. Kevin McKeage, Gordon, Sanlon and Sackfield. Friday the Lions played the return game of a home and home exhibition series with Thornhill at the local arena. 11, was a similar story. a one-sided contest. The Lions took this one 9-1. Scorers were: Val Steffen and Charlie Lunau with two goals each. Paul Bailie. Alan Graham, Tommy Sanlon, Jim- my Clement and Terry Rice with one each. The Lions let down in the second period, scoring all goals in the first and third stanzas. Thornhill scored its only goal in the second. Dave Courtemanche being the marksman. Saturday the Hill peewees‘ visited Forest Hill Arena to‘ take on Downsview in an exhi-i bition contest. It was Downs- view's second outing of the day. Richmond Hill scored twice in the first. period, both by Steffan assisted by Rice. Also helping were Graham and Peter Ranieri. Downsview made it 2-1 at the end of the first. In the second the Hillers scored once. Gordon assisted ‘by Graham. and in the third they got three more while al- ilowing Downsview to score only once. It was Terry O’- ‘Brien, up for a tryout, Lunau ‘and Steffan, who completed his hat trick. Assists went to Tom MacRae, Lunau, O’Brien. Billy‘ Stephenson and Rice. Final score was 6-2 for Rich- mond Hill. Sunday the Lions travelled to Ted Reeves Arena to play Scarboro Lions in an exhibition game. It was a fair contest at times, but the Hillers are jug- gling players to achieve max- imum production possibilities. The contest ended in a loss for the Lions 5-2. Steve Gordon: scored unassisted and Kevin McKeage got lucky on a play‘ set up by Steffan. BANTAMS Won Two. Lost One ‘ North End Cleaners Bantams \played Goulding Park from the Metro League at, Doublerink Wednesday. Their oppositibn claims some fame by virtue of a win over Toronto Nationals. Goulding Park clicked for two quick goals in the first five minutes to set the Clean- ers back on their heels. The score remained that way until late in the third period when John Gropp sank a pass from Barnett. Although the Clean- ers pressed hard they failed to get the equalizer and the game ended 2-1 in favor of Goulding Park. The Cleaners all played quite well, particularly Dave Addley in the net. Friday in Richmond Hill the bantams met the highly re- garded Oakville team and came out 4«1 winners. Ranieri from Dunlap and Cronkwright. This was the best game this year for the Cleaners. featuring great team work. sharp passing and good positional play. All the boys from Dave Addley in goal to the forward lines played excep- tionally well and would all rate stars in this good team effort. Sunday the Cleaners played Oshawa in Richmond Hill. Most fans agreed that this was the fastest skating game of the year â€"- a real dandy. even better than Friday night‘s. Although the Cleaners fell behind 1-0 in the second, they came back to tie the count on a neat goal by Bill Weber from Spearing, made possible by a slick crossover pattern by Brother Dick ~â€"- a picture goal. Late in the. game, enjoying a man advantage and with the power play working. Bill inter- cepted a clearing attempt by Oshawa and shifted around a couple of men to fire the puck as, Johnny Gropp set up a screen. The Cleaners won this one 2-1. Particular mention is made of Dave Addley, who made several key saves. and of Larry Kellett, who played a tremendous game on defence. The boys looked very sharp and ready for the Riverside tourna- ment as again they exhibit- ed great teamwork. The tournament starts Decem- ber 26. Tuesday night the boys playâ€" ed at Newmal‘ket and have ice time booked for Friday. Another Injury Add to the injured list of the Legion Midgets the name of Gary Hall, who is sidelined after stepping on a piece of broken glass. Last Thursday night the Le- gion journeyed to Oshawa with two complete lines of replace. ments from the house league. Th 8-4 score in Oshawa’s favor was not indicative of the play. The Legion would have won this one but for the tremendous play of the Oshawa goalie and hard luck on the open corners. MIDGETS Hal Murphy contributed a hat trick, assisted by John Dunkley and Jimmy Ball, with help from Mike Evans and Daryl Rice, accounted for the other tally. Sunday, in one of the best games of the season. the Clean- ers edged highly-rated George- town 1~0. Wednesday nlght at Rich- mond Hill the Legion meets Woodbridge in a league game at 9:30. December 22 they will‘ play in Trenton and December 24 will host Camp Borden at 2:30 in a league game.
