The subject was one of the major items on the agenda of the general commission on union between the two churches which met at Bolton December 12-13. While some Anglicans and United Church congregations c1w25 have been participating in each‘, other‘s communion services. of-‘, ficial sanction of the Anglican Church has not yet been given} A committee has now been bility of a covenant ion. The general commission on Report Drop In Sales 0f Religious Cards Sales of greeting cards with, a religious theme are steadily ,declining in Canada while theI total greeting card market is booming to upwards of 750,- 000,000 cards a year, a three year study of the card market reveals. Conducted by a card manu- facturing firm, the study shows that total sales of religious cards dropped an average of one percent a year in both 1965 and 1966. So far, 1967 sales are following the same pattern. And this is at a time when the' card market is expanding at a rate of 10 percent a year. Christmas and Easter are the1 two biggest times of the year‘ for selling cards with a relig-} ious theme. In the past two years there has been a steadyi decline in sales at both Christ- mas and Easter, with each‘ showing a steady one percent a year drop. Sales of 1967 Easter Cards paralleled this decline and with a good part of 1967 Christmas cards already manufactured and ordered. the same decline is evident. It was noted that card manu- facturers in no way influence selections made by customers. The companies manufacture cards only to meet the demand. An interesting note is while Christmas and Easter religeous card sales are declining, Hanuk- kah and Jewish New Year cards are dramatically increasing. For the past three years Hanukkah card sales have risen an average of 90 percent a year while Jewish New Year card sales have increased by nearly 20 percent annually. Whether the sales decline of religious cards is sociologically significant is something on which card manufacturers do not comment. However, church officials have noted church attendance and membership in Canada have been declining in the past three years. In addition to the 40 commisâ€" sion members, co-chairmen from the special commissions of doctrine, liturgy, constitu- tion, legal matters and the church in the world partici- pated in the discussions. The commission executive, made up of clergy and lay repâ€" resentatives from both denom- inations, was asked to prepare for the next meeting guide Ai‘authorized to study the possi-‘lines for parish clergy for ex? _ whichiperimentation at the local level. One of the two permanent secretaries to work on church union was named at the meet- ing. He is Rev. Canon Ralph Latimer, general secretary of the Anglican Church, who will assume full duties of the new position next June 1. It is expected the United Church will make a similar appoint- ment shortly. Target dates for the comple- tion of reports of the five spec- ial commissions were also agreed upon. The commissions on doctrine, liturgy and the church in the world are to complete their re- ports by December, 1968. The constitutional commission will report by June, 1969, and the legal commission by December. 1969. The final document. prepared by the general commission, de- tailing how union is to be con- summated, is to be ready for presentation to the two churches by June, 1972. It will be submitted for approval to the highest church courts, the general synod of the Anglican Church and the general council of the United Church“ The two churches may meet together in the late summer or fall of 1972. If this final document is ap- proved, it will go to the ap- propriate bodies throughout both churches for ratification.
