McDonald ANGLICAN ALLIANCE Manager - Bell Canada Of special interest to all of us was the Company‘s ability to continue to hold unchanged at the 1958 level our basic schedule of local telephone rates â€"-â€" a significant victory in the struggle against inflation. Interest in space age communications was reflected in two projects. In the first. we started construction of an earth station at Bouchette. Quebec. designed to test satellite relay of TV. date and voice communications into Canada“: Far North. 111 the second. we joined with members of the Trans~Canada Telephone System and CN-CP Telecommunications in the proposal to provide a domestic satellite communications system for Canada. Our construction program was vast -â€" for the first time in a single year we exceeded $300 million in construction expenditures to further expand and improve our communications net- work. Over 95 percent of this money was spent in Canada. In the last week or so our Annual Report for 1967 has been mailed out to our shareholders. Some of you may have received one since more than a quarter-million Canadians hold stock in Bell Canada. Behind the financial figures are several stories of events which marked our progress during Centennial Year. Our sponsor- ship with other members of The Telephone Association of Canada of the popular Telephone Pavilion at Expo 67 wasn't the only milestone in Montreal. If you visited Expo and used any of the attractive public telephones while there ~â€" we had almost 550 located on the Expo site â€"â€" your call went through Canada's first electronic telephone exchange. We opened this exchange in time to serve Expo 67 and its millions of visitors. A similar unit will be added this year to Toronto‘s telephone network, and work is being started on one for Ottawa. We grew past the 5 million mark in the number of phones served â€" in fact, 284.000 were added to the total at the service of our customers. ,B ’I‘ “all: ‘ II. , in (A Fellowship Church) 50 Wright Street (Opposite the High School) Pastor: Rev. Addressing a meeting at Christ Church Cathedral. Ham- ilton recently. Robert Welch, MLA for Lincoln, who holds the posts of provincial secretary and minister of citizenship, cri- ticized ministers of various de- nominations for making pro- nouncements "as if taking posi- tion with the NDP". Although he upheld the belief that nothing human can really be outside the church‘s mission and concern and that the church must get deeply involved “in all efforts which make for justice and true welfare," he contend- ed that the church must not identify itself with any particu- lar political party. Rather, he said, “It must be free and will- ing to co-operate with any pro- gram based on genuine human concern.” While he agreed that there was nothing wrong with clergy- men having political views or belonging to various parties, he said there must be a clear line between these views and ltheir duty as clergyman. Many minis- ters, he charged, voiced politi- cal views as though speaking on behalf of the church, whereas they were only expressing their own beliefs. Addressing the congregation of Lansing United Church March 8 on “The Christian in Politics”, Dalton Bales, Minis- ter of Labor and MLA for York Mills. urged that all Christians should be actively engaged in poiltics. While some find it hard to reconcile some of the things done in partisan politics with Christian morality, “A funda- mental tenet is that to do good one must remain in power." he said. “This often leads to seem- ineg schipohrenic actions.” An example of this was the US. which in fighting Com- WINNER UFIiACADEl flESI I’IBIIIEIE ‘ . .‘y g _ V a .‘ IV I ; . , 9- 3/" I ransom W E Fowlarious ALL COLOR Comedy Show!
