And don‘t underestimate the p e n n y beggar bank. This is a project for every individual, family and group in Canada. Your local branch will do all the work if you just put in the pennies and An ideal project for youth groups and Sunday schools is the little ditty bag filled with all kinds of usgful and play articles. Every year, leading Canadian artists contrib- ute distinctive designs for the Canadian Christmas card program. The sale of cards is a. major activity and the local CANSAVE branch welcomes support and new sales outlets in the area. change. Each year, CANSAVE sends special Christmas stockings to many countries. These go to children who gave never known any kind of Christmas gift. Recent earthquakes in Turkey and the war in Vietnam and other disasters continually deplete the fund. In Vietnam, CANSAVE contributed toward a convalescent centre for children burned or crippled. In conjunction is a creche for the children of wid- owed mothers as well as a vocational training centre, so that widows and older orphans may learn a trade to support themselves. HOW WE CAN HELP Besides the penny beggar bank, the fund has a new and used clothing program with a depot at 68 Hayter Street Toronto. Diapers and babyp clothing are high on the list of needs Local committees are being develoï¬ed in Uganda which assume responsibility for the welfare and improved conditions of their children. The Eskimo layette program is playing a sig- nificant role in the overall efforts to reduce infant mortality in Canada’s northland. Warm clothing and blankets are sent regularly to Moosonee and Lab- radar. CANSAVE contributes regularly to support of welfare workers at Hymettus and in Hong Kong. In Israel, children from many nations are given vocational training at the children’s centre, a project of Youth Aliyah, also aided by CANSAVE. The objective of CANSAVE is to help people to help themselves. For example, the small nurseries in the Greek villages of Alphori and Korena. have become a focus for revitalizing village life, resulting in improved agricultural programs. Mothers are given training in hygiene, nutrition, environmental sanitation and child care. In Korea, welfare workers were helped to initiate the first factory day nurseries so that working mothers may actually nurse their babies while they work. A rescue centre for lost and abandoned child- ren was set up. (Continued from Page 2) their one hot meal of the day because of a CANSAVE feeding program. catching up. The sanctuary is being raised by means of a specially constructed, portable platform, so that even those seated at the very back of the church will be able to see. This is being built in the base- ment by John Collins and his crew. It will be cov- ered with sail-cloth and all ingeniously disguised to blend in with the church itself. The pulpit is being converted into a pillar. Essential to the atmosphere of this drama is the music, and the choir will chant under the direc- tion of choirmaster Jack Large. Much of the music and plain song was composed for “Murder in the Cathedral†by Healey Willans. This production is a great team effort by the congregation of St. Mary’s, and will certainly draw the very theatre-minded population of Richmond Hill and surrounding districts. The only people who should stay away in droves are children, who would surely be bored to tears. For information on reserving programs for November 14, 15 and 16. please call Marni Twidale at} 889-1401, or inquire after church services at St. Mary’s. But he might just as well have stay- ed at home. John Robertson, of Lively. Ontario, was the key Crown witness in the case against two youths. Mircea Copilu. 18. and Vaughan police officers tes- tifying for the Crown were, De- tective Arnold Leeder and Con- stable R. Blackweu, the inves- tigating officer. who has since resigned from the force. Serg- eant Tom Shields took photo- graphs of the scene of the acci- dent. A mechanic, Orlando Runco, of Downsview, testified that he had relined the back brakes of the truck and readjusted the front brakes about three or four weeks before the accident. He had also tested the brakes with a full load two weeks be- fore, and found them operating satisfactorily. Another mechanic, Dino La- bardo, of Downsview, said he tested the truck’s brake drums and shoes and wheel cylinder after the accident. and found them in order. The condition of the truck made it impossible to check the hydraulic lines and bydrovac, he told Mr. Cooper. Crown Attorney John Ap- plegarth admitted that “this is not a strong case on the evi- dence,†but argued there was sufficient to justify a trial. He disclosed that a key Crown wit- ness. a taxi driver who witness- ed the accident, had not turned up for the hearing. The truck being driven by Shelly was a 1967 Mercury dump truck belonging to Gul- lietti and Constantino Sand and Gravel, of Weston. At the time of the accident, Shelly was tak- ing the sand load to the Jane and Finch area. In the statement, which was read to the court, Shelly con- tended that his brakes had failed â€" they had “gone hard†â€" making it impossible for him to stop. He had not noticed Hynd’s red Pontiac approaching fhe intersection from the east until too late, otherwise he would have driven the truck into a ditch, the statement declared. “There is not a scrap of evi- dence to show advertent negli- gence on the part of the ac- cused." asserted Mr. Cooper. Defence counsel. Austin I Cooper of Toronto, argued that' the only evidence heard deal- ing with how the accident took place was a voluntary statement made by Shelly to Vaughan Township Police the day after the accident. | According to evidence pre- sented at the preliminary hear- ing. the truck was travelling south on Dufferin and had not stopped at the stop sign at the intersection with the Maple Sideroad.
