Included in the book's 184 paint- ings are 121 color reproductions“ They form the largest collection of Wyeth’s work ever published. “My interest in Andrew Wyeth stems from my own childhood,” said Mrs. Sumner. “I owned the English classic Robin Hood. It was illustrated by N. C. Wyeth. father to Andrew Wyeth. Andrew Wyeth's son makes the third generation of paint- lng Wyeths.” The beautiful foreward by Andrew Wyeth will perhaps give a clue to the true source of his inspira- tion. “I think one’s art goes as far and as deep as one’s love goes. I see no reason for painting but that. If I have anything to offer, it's my emotional fogtact with the place where I live and the people 0.), "Until the township of Markham took over the library, it was rather limited in scope due to lack of money,” said Mrs. Sumner. “Since we’ve had a considerable grant from them, we’ve been able to supply more non-fiction books as well as fiction and satisfy the reading taste of the patrons. Also on the staff are three paid library workers who are fulltirne. This includes myself, Mrs. Maude Car- ruthers and Mrs. Betty Boyden. Mrs. Carruthers is head clerical librarian and Mrs. Boyden does most of the cataloguing.” Last January, Betty Sumner was appointed chief librarian of the Thornhill branch of the Markham Public Library. Previous to that, she gathered a wealth of experience during her nine year stint with North York Public Library. Her idea of library work is to find the right book for the right person at the right time. Another improvement is the increased number of good reference books. The art section has an expanding shelf of special books of reference. A recent edition is a volume by Aubrey Beardsley. ‘High school stuflents working on current pro- jects glean much of their material from the refer- ence library. University students also find what they need to complete a thesis. Mrs. Carruthers said that the membership had grown considerably due to the influx of new resi- dents in the area. Right now, the membership is 2,000-and books now in circulation have increased 8,500 over last year. Another new feature is that periodicals are allowed to circulate. Anyone who wishes a back number can get it upstairs in the library files. A LIBRARY WITH PERSONALITY This is a. unique library. One cannot help but be impressed with the quiet goodvtaste of its decor and furnishings. The decorative effects reflect most strongly the personalities of Mrs. Sumner and Mrs. Carruthers. To make the library even more attrac- tive they brought their own precious antiques and paintings and arranged them so that others might enjoy them too. ' Mrs. Sumner said that she and her staff try to keep a. proper balance in the types of books on the shelves. There is a. wide variety of reading mater- ial and the books are displayed in plastic jackets. There are other people who contribute to the gracious atmosphere of this library, volunteers like Mary Alcock, Nan Burridge, Gladys Zinkan, Marian Simpson, Irene Clatworthy and Betty Lomax. . ‘ “The volunteers and pages are indispensable to us,” said Mrs. Sumner. Pages who help to keep the library working smoothly are Sarah Moon, Sue Kearns, Maria Canas, Pat Breithaupt, Jan O’Hagan, Maureen Lynch and Pat Simcoe. THE DISTRICT GROWS.
