VOL. 91, N0. 24. Aurora To Play Host little NHL Tourney I ~ SPORTS Gathered myself together and tottered down to the arena Saturday afternoon to watch the Rich- mond Hill Rams do battle with the NHL Qtd-Timers: Just don’t know, Old Timers they might be, but the ones -I saw out there must have found the magic elixir that either puts off old age or conceals it amazingly well. The NHL’ers zipped their way to an easy 10-5 (I think that’s what the score was, roughly) and it didn’t surprise me a bit. These guys play regularly and, let’s face it, quite a few of them would make any senior hockey team around happy to suit them up. Fellows such as Danny Lewicki, Barry Cullen, Cal Gardner, Johnny McCormack, and Harry Wat- son, to name a few represent quite a charge coming down the ice at you. Just ask young 14-year-old Louis Moore, son of Doug Moore 0’11 268 Iredale Road, who had to face the onslaught in goal. There were at least two occasions when my battered-up and buffeted heart went out to him. That was when the NHL’ers got two clean break- aways. I’m a coward anyway but even if I wasn‘t I know what I’d do. Get down on my knees, pray. That would stop them. That is if they were Christ- ians and I presume they are. How would you like to be standing in goal, at any age, when a guy like Danny Lewicki or Cal Gardner has a clear path to your goal from about the centre-ice lanes. But not Louis. He hung in there. Sure, they scored but he hung in there. I’d defy any netminder anywhere to stop those high, hard drives that catch the top corner about two inches from the goalpost. No, you just wave them goodbye. Greg Sephton Drives Home 4 Goals Rams Bomb Bowmanville 9-2 About 300 fans saw the Rams take a 5-0 first period lead against Bowmanville and in- crease it to 7-0 by the end of the second period as the visit- ors never got started. Aiding and abetting Sephton’s four goals were single efforts by Harvey Gordon, Larry Watson, Jodie Holden, Gary Methe, and John Dunkley. Larry Devitt and Kim Rogers scored for the visitors. There wasn't much, if any- thing, to fault the Rams on this time out as the squad combined smooth passing, positional play- ing, and tough. persistent back- checking to thoroughly confuse the visitors. Richmond Hill washed little time in showing the way as Gordon took a pass from Steve Hall at the 19 second mark and rammed the puck home be- hind Doug .Hayes. Beginning of the end. Then it was an unassisted goal by Watson at 6:32 and then Sephton's first effort, re- sulting from a three-way pass- ing play right in on net, at 8:10. Assists went to Wayne Harrington and Grant Rose. Goals by Holden and Methe at 6:53 and 16:16 respectively finished out the first period scoring. Assist on Holden's counter went to Watson and on Methe's to Gordon. The trend continued in the second period as Sephton rap- ped home another neat goal at 11:47 from a perfect pass by Rose who played a strong game all the way. Then it was Dunk- ]ey at 14:42 from Bruce Hutch- inson. GREG SEPHTON Scores 4 Goals period Bowmanville goals but offset them with two of their own. Sephton scored his third and fourth goals in this period. One of the more stellar plays on penalty-killing chores was Wayne Harrington who was all over the ice breaking up enemy combinations and stopping pot- ential scoring rushes before they could be started. The Rams got off to a flying start against Oakville jumping into a 2â€"0 lead off goals by Steve Addley and Bob Morris at 4:04 and 11:19 of the first period.
