RICHMOND HILL REAL ESTATE By HARRY SADLER See you next week L Eb'l‘fl'l'b by nanny. Dru.“ Emerald Isle Real Estate Ltd. 773-4391 motto of "Be Prepared” couldn’t than when applied to home owners Usually there are only one or two “policemen” on guard at the entrance to a wasps’ nest. but this one had three or four dozen “policemen” on guard, and three of them stung Mr. Thomas, even though he gave it the end of the Mill Pond Park’s R11_rpble AveIVIAueA parking lot. He was called to the site last Thursday and found the nest, which is about 33 inches in air. cumference and 18 inches tall, in the shrubbery about five feet from a private driveway. Mr. Thomas waited until evening when all the wasps would be returned to the nest. then sprayed it with a full can of wasp and bee killer. On Fri- dey he cut it out of the shrubs. nstance to have planting of trees 'operty, it must be born in mind 111 are better periods for these lanted in the Fall will provide next Summer but they must be a second spraying before tempting to remove it. A great admirer of the wondâ€" ers of nature. he took the nest home with him. commenting, “The weaving is beautiful, thin layers of paper like asbestos. It sparkles in the sun, and the construction is marvelous.” He intends to keep it so that it can be shown to science clas- ses in the fall. He has done this many times. and finds that they usually want to take it apart to see how the colony is \set up and examine the internal construction. Since this nest is so unusually large. however, he is willing to give it to anyone who wants it ‘for a special project. If it is handled too often there is dang- er of breaking it, for it is so fragile. "Nature is a wonderful thing." observed Mr. Thomas. “People take everything for granted. They don't take the time to see what nature can do." Nature can be pretty rough, too. he admits. A week before he removed a wasps‘ nest from underground â€" “They were a different type of wasp," he ex- plained. An 18 month old child had stumbled on this particular nest and been stung about 30 times. The youngster was taken to hospital and soon recovered. He uses a paste of ordinary baking soda to treat his own insect bites and stings, but ob- served that wasps can be ex- tremely dangerous to people with allergies.
