He threatens suicide. He has complete ‘wipe- outs'. He’s gone gun and knife crazy.†the youth’s mother told the court. The youth pleaded guilty to a July 7 charge of attempting to steal gasoline from the car of a local nurse at the York Central Hospital parking lot. He was pursued and stopped on Maple Road by Vaughan Police. Another youth with him at the time was convicted and fined previously, the court was told. Judge Charles remanded the youth in custody until Novem- ber 30. saying he wanted the young man to see a jail psy- chiatrist. The judge also ordered a pre-sentence report. This weekend is the last chance the public will have to visit the authentic pioneer homes and buildings in Black Creek Pioneer Village before it closes for the winter on Monâ€" day (November 30). Christmas Comes Early This Weekend At Pioneer Village The village is located at Jane Street and Steeles Avenue West. It is being developed by the Metro Conservation Authority as an authentic pre-1867 cross- roads community. Visitors will also be able to‘.4 purchase these puddings in white ironstone bowls, in either small or large sizes. at the gift shop. Various other articles made by the villagers are also on sale there, including poman- ders made from oranges, pears, lemons, and apples studded with cloves and rolled in cinam- mon and orris root, then tied ‘with a ribbon. These pomanders are hung in rooms and closets where they provide a pleasant scent. Christmas cake made by the villagers to a pioneer recipe is also on sale in the gift shop for $1 per pound. As well, visitors can buy herbs grown in the village garden which have been powdered and put into small, old-fashioned style glass jars which would add a decorative touch to any kitchen. Ask Higher Pensions For Retired Teachers The Legislature's failure to adjust pensions of retired teachers in line with rising cost of living has come in for critic- ism by the Ontario Teachers' Federation. In a letter to all Ontario MLA’s the federation urged members of the legislature to press for immediate increases for the retired teachers, 48 per- cent of whom still receive less than $3,000 a year. “This matter has drégged on far too long already . . .there have been enough deputations. committee meetings, studies and evaluations to prepare for ac- tion. What is lacking is the will to act,†states the letter dated November 10 and signed by OTF President Mrs. Hazel Farr and Norman McLeod, president of the Superannuated Teachers of Ontario. The federation concedes that there have been “some improve- ments“ for a few pensioners “but thousands of pensioners have had no relief." It points out that interest ac- cumulating from funds of the Ontario Teachers' Superannua- tion Commission “would more thag pay for a proper adjust- ment to pensions of those who taught in the lean years when salaries were cut or frozen.†‘ They proceeded with a charge on only one of the admitted of- lfences. the rest being admitted Judge Charles and Crown" Attorney Applegath decided on‘ a new procedure in dealing with I Desmeules. l4 by the youth and to be consi- dered when sentence is passed. This saved the court time and paper work. This is the general British practice and can thus be validly adopted in a Canadian court, the Crown attorney and judge agreed. Desmeules was remanded in custody to be sentenced at a future date. Michael Logan, 21. of 16 Ave- nue, Richvale, November 19 faced charges of car theft and impaired driving. He told the court he never had a driver’s license. He admitted the October 3 impaired driving offence and was fined $150. He was remanded to Decem- ber 3 for trial on the car theft charge. Logan was also prohibited from driving for three months. Hiâ€"s breathalyzer reading was 1.0 and 1.1, the court was told. Police noticed Logan‘s vehicle at 12:45 am at Carrville Road and Yonge Street, in Richvale weaving from one lane to the other and almost going off the road. He was doing 60 mph in a 45 mph zone, the court was told. When stopped, Logan jumped from his vehicle and ran through a field. He fell twice and was caught. ‘ Logan wasiforcefully subdued after a struggle with Constable Mike Connor. the court was told Long-handled, two-prong iron forks which were hand- forged by the Black Creek Vill- age blacksmith are also on sale.
