This is a little backwater town on US. 301, little more than a cross- roads, but is renowned for the most infamous speed traps in the country. Former Georgia Governor Lester Maddox label- led the local officials “corrupt†and erected billboards warning travellers of speed traps and clip joints. Ludowici's bag of gimmicks has even included trick lights. ‘ Much of the State of Dela- ware, where officials state they are desperately trying to con- trol a soaring accident rate. State Police use every device in the book, including unmarked patrol cars, hidden radar and aircraft surveillance. From out of nowhere, it seems. a local policeman drives up beside you and waves you off the road. With a smile, us iually, he informs you that you ‘have just past a hidden radar. ‘gone through an amber light or crossed the solid line. He writes a ticket, then instructs you to follow him to the justice of the peace where you are required to post bond, if you are fortun- ate enough to have cash or an acceptible credit card. Other- wise you may spend the night in jail. ‘ Speed traps are in some cases, a legitimate device for insuring highway safety, but of- ten they are merely blatant gimmicks for fattening local treasuries and serve only to breed contempt for the law. Just one half mile north of Maple Sideroad and perhaps you can get this marvellous feeling at the Garret Gallery. Mr. Howarth’s paintings are‘mod- erately priced. He’d be happy to see you. I spent an hour there talking with Mr. How- arth, walking about the studio and under the trees; and it seemed time had slowed down to a country timetable. The sun on Mrs. Howarth’s big drowsy black eyed susans and Mr. Howarth‘s pleasant con- versation put me so at ease and entirely outside the hustle of 1971. “Wouldn’t it be wonderful just to stay hereâ€, I mused, and I could smell the odors of an old fashioned Sunday farm lunch, wafting across the lawn. Oh, wouldn’t it be wonderful to stay. . The Garret Gallery is in the house and it is a garret. It is fortunate that the Howarths have the space to display their work this way. About fifty paintings areikept on display and the guest book in the gallery shows visitors from England, Thunder Bay, Victoria. Sault Ste. Marie and many local areas.
