All are welcome Tuesday Bible Study and Midweek Bible ATOMS York Mills 7. Wilson-Niblett 4 Monday, December 13, was an unlucky day indeed for the Wil- son-Niblett Atoms. They decided to have York Mills play with them in practice time and play with them they did to the tune of a 7-4 defeat. Wilson-Nibleit pointgetters were Frank Nigro with a hat trick, Tom Peden with a goal and Steve Price, Angus McGre- gor and Phil Wood with an as- sist each. Richmond Hill 3. Woodbridge 2 A tremendous game and a real big win in league play was re- gistered December 17 as Wilson- Niblett outscored Woodbridge 3-2 in a thrill-packed affair. Two of the locals goals were scored by Steve Madden on booming slapshots from the blue line. The other goal was scored by Tom Peden. Assists went to Peter Halliday. Madden, Jamie Gropp and Price. This was only the second loss by Woodbridge in league play. Wilson-Niblett 5 Oshawa Dines 2 Saturday, December 18. the W-N boys travelled to Oshawa for an exhibition game with the Dines Peewees. The hosts got two quick goals in the first couple of minutes before the boys from the Hill settled down and “Wee” Angus McGregor and his mates went to work on a relentless five goal comeback. Not so this timeâ€"Orillia has found something as they came out hard and fast and took ad- 'vantage of the tired local lads. ‘ W-N big gun was Captain Nigro who scored two of his team's three goals and assisted on Mad- den’s counter. Both Frank’s goals were solo efforts, which he engineered himself by setting up relentless forechecking and then moving in for his famous deke-play on the opposing goalie. Angus had one goal and three big assists. Steve Price and Phil Wood picked up one goal each. The other goal was credited to Number 6, which is not assigned to any member of the team. Proper credit. however, will be reported on the statistic sheet after a check had been made On the identity of this goalscorer. Other assists went to Blair Lewis. who is really flying late- ly; Madden with two nice set- ups: Bill Bytes with one and Peden with one. Sunday morning headaches were soon cleared away as the Hillers slipped and slid down to Don Mills Arena to tangle with Mississauga in the first round of the big atom tourna- ment. It was a beautiful exhibition of hockey 'by both teams as the name of the game was “play".: Only one penalty was assessed} and that one went to Mississ-‘ auga on a minor infraction. Goalie Kelvin Makamichl ‘ played an outstanding game as his “hot mitt” drew ap- plause from the crowd many times. The Hill’s first goal was scor- ed by Steve Price on a neat threeway play assisted by Byres and Madden. The locals’ second goal was scored on a “heads-up” play by Phil Woods who dug it out of the corner and passed back to Pointman Gropp, who made no mistake on a beautiful long shot right under the oppos- ing goalie. DON MILLS TOURNAMENT Mississauga 3, Richmond Hill 2 Bond Steel Minor Midgets Win Two More Late in the third period, Fran- kie Nigro made a real move on the Mississauga defenceman and tried to pick the low corner of the net, but alas, the puck pass- ed the post by a hair -â€" on the wrong side! Ally in all, this was a real team effort. Richmond Hill 3. Orillia 2 The second game of the day proved to be a little much for some of the lads, as it turned out to be a real squeaker of a win in a big league game. Last time these two teams met. Orillia was no match at all as they took a 12â€"1 defeat. EQQQQ““““““’ i Richmond Hill High School News I I By DIANA COOK I .‘Iti‘I‘I““““i Anyone who happened to be inspecting the halls of RHHS this last week, would have hopefully noticed the real, genuine, even green, Christmas Tree standing in the midst of all the single-minded students, who were bustling about whispering over and over to themselves that magic word: H‘OLIDéY. The above mentioned tree is not only a. fine specimen and a. builder of Christmas Spirit, but serves another worthwhile purpose as well, for any presents placed beneath it will be sent to Thorn- haven School. .11!,. J.an cu uvuuvu The traditional grade 13 assembly, which takes place on the last school day before the Christmas Break, has become a fixed annual event at Richmond Hill. This year’s theme was based on the immortal “Twas The Night Before Christmas”, narrated by Tom Grieves. Although the production essentially stuck to the poem plot, there were some definite variations, such as the first scene which took place at the infamous “Inn” and later on a “quickie” by Anne Cover. £11111: Lav v u; . The main scene was a dream sequence. involv- ing John Barnett as one of the children. and some remarkably real looking toys, (Cathy Clark, Char- lotte Barber, and Diane Willock), among many (tal- ented) others. ,1 D1“:qu Unllv5uu The program was ended with the singing of Christmas Carols. The drama club has decided to perform Sean O’Casey's “The Plough And The Stars”, which re- quires a cast of fifteen -â€" all of whom Will prob- ably be stationed in front of various mirrors for the next few months, frantically practising their Irish accents MERRY CHRISTMAS; v COMING UPâ€"A very light holiday schedule brings the second round of the Don Mills Tournament with Mis- sissauga on Sunday. Mon- day, the locals hope to ad- vance in this tournament. ATOMS “B” Etobicoke Canucks 4 Pinecrest Speedway 0 Pinecrest Speedway. Rich- mond Hill's Atom "B" Club re- ceived their baptism of fire last Sunday, as they were defeated 4-0 in the first game of the best 'of two total goals tournament by ,a crackerjack Etobicoke DOuble "A" squad in the Atom Tournament. This was a case of David ver- sus Goliath, as the Hillers com- posed of top players from the house league met a formidable opponent. In this contest though, David did not win; yet even in defeat, the local lads refused to quit. Pinecrest Goalies Steve Shadoff and John Tuck. exhibit- ing raw courage, faced a total of 32 shots in the 40 minute game, as they amazed the spec- tators with their dexterity. The Hillers held the strong Etobicoke Team scoreless for the first 20 minutes. In this pel‘ioc}z Stan Norman showed astuteness as he alertly flicked the puck before it crossed the goal line. after it had eluded Goalie Shadoff. In tihe last period. however, the Inevitable happened as Etobicoke potted a goal at 6:11, and from that point on, despite Pinecrest’s savage checking, Etobicoke add- ed three goals. The coaches of this "B" Club. Messrs. Bedford, McLean and Wood did not have their en- thusiasm dampened in this game, and they were quick to praise the efforts of the entire team, particularly, Goalies Shad- off and Tuck, as well as Steve Bowers and John Burnett, who were carrying the puck with authority. MINOR MIDGETS As an example some of the regular goalgetters decided to spread the honors around and so goals were scored by Brad iCampbell with two. Kevin Mc‘ Keage with one and two assists, Tom Lamb a goal and Rick :Sackfield a goal and an assist. 10ther assists went to Mike ‘Wood. Bond Steel 5, Woodbridge 4 ‘ Friday, December 17, Wood- ‘bridge scored at nine seconds on the first period and had the Steelers down two by the seven minute mark, in another exam- ple of the come-from-behind ltechnique. Bond Steel 5, Gal-(ville 5 The Steelers travelled to Mil- ton for their return game with Oakville December 14. We have come to the conclusion that this team doesn’t like losing, but they certainly confuse everyone, even themselves, by coming from behind each time to hold the fort. “Dave Dunkley opened the scoring in the first with Jeff Wood drawing the assist: Early in the second period Chuck Lunau was set up by Val Steffen and Dunkley for the second counter. ’In the third. Kim Mabley and Dennis Acomb combined to send Jim Wood into the clear. He The Steelers finally decided that they were playing hockey and moved everything including the puck. Goals and assists were finally gained by the following stalwarts in this rugged game: Jim Clement two goals and two assists, Bob McMeekin two goals and two assists. Kevin McKeage 2i goal. Other assists went to Tom Lamb with three, Jeff Switzer with two and Rick Sackfield with one. Keep going fellows the coach and manager have received a generous donation tranquilizers. MIDGETS Legion 3, Aurora 1 Friday, December 9. the Leâ€" gionaires visited Aurora and came away with a 3-0 victory. The local had control of the game from the opening whistle and outshot their opponents 24- 10. THE LIBERAL, Richmond Hill, Ontario, Thursday, Dec. Don Mills Vya. It looked in the first pen‘odlplayed this year as if the Legionnaires could Lunau again ‘ handle Barrie as they more than off on the right held their own. but before the home the first game ended the locals were 4:06 of the fir trailing in a 7-2 decision. Rice assisting. T made no mistake as he beat the Aurora goalie cleanly. It wasn't until late in the third period that Aurora got ~ one. scoring while the locals were two men short. Barrie 7, Richmond Hill 2 Sunday, December 12. with first place in the league at stake, the Legion crew headed for Barâ€" rie to take on the Barrie Co- ops. Dunkley sent the ' Legion ahead 1-0 at 4:03 of the first when he was set up by Steffan. This lead was held until near the end of the period when penalties cropped up and Barrie scored with the locals playing two men short. This was the end ofthe game as far as the Legion was concerned. In the second period the locals fired home three unanswered goals to complete the scoring in this one. Steffan scored the go ahead goal on a setup by Jeff Wood and Paul Bailie. Bruce Barrie slammed home two more goals in less than a minute to completely demoralize the local club. In the last two periods it was the case of Barrie hitting hard and skating circles around the Legion who. in many cases left Bruce Hailes in goal helpless against two or three on-rlushing forwards. Late in the third, with the game completely out of reach. Dunkley. who never quits scored his second goal unassisted while killing off a penalty. Oshawa 6, Richmond Hill 0 Wednesday, December 15, the Legion crew travelled to Oshawa and were handed a 6-0 shellack- ing. They were never in the picture as Oshawa carried the game from the start and the locals were unable to cope with the hard-hitting. hard-skating opponents. Win Two From Detroit The Legionnaires hosted the Big D club from Detroit on the weekend and won both games by identical scores of 5-2. gwwamflmmmm After having 13 goals scored against them in the two pre- vious games, the local crew came up with a much better ef- fort in both departments. Saturday Detroit opened the scoring at the 1:48 mark of the first period. Peter Ranieri tied it up with an unassisted goal at 12:18 of the period. Detroit went into the lead again two minutes later. However, before the per- iod ended the locals had tied the game on a fine effort by Steve Gordon with Dunkley and Steffan drawing assists. JACKPOT $500 - 56 NUMBERS RICHMOND HILL T. V.
