The Thornhill “Reliables”. sponsored by H 8; S Reliance‘ Ltd.. Photo Engravers. had won each of the first two games by. the identical scores of 4-2. In this third game they left no doubt about their superiority. Facing elimination last Thurs- day. Whitby opened strongly and had an edge on the play in the first period. Wayne Grant once againi demonstrated an ability to scorel in key situations. as he banged in two goals late in the first period to take the pressure off.‘ and Scott Howson added one in the second. Going into the third period. Thornhill led 3-0. Whitby then scored two fast goals to move back into contention. At this point. Howson made one of the big plays of the night. rushing the length of the ice, and passing to Eric Coynel who made the score 4â€"2. A somewhat frustrated Whit- by team tried to physically pun- ish the Thornhill boys through- out the third period, resulting in their being assessed four penalties including a miscon- duct. In this aggressive envir- onment the Thornhill boys "played it cool‘. picking up goals from Tim Coughlin and Howson. Howson also picked up three assists in this game. with single assists going to David Johns. Scott Burkart; Coyne. Rick Buchan and Greg Warga.
