THE LIBERAL. Richmond Hill. Ontario. Thurs All Sorts Of Sports By BOB CARTON 10 Hill Midgets Reach Grand Championship Even now it is still a little hard to believe. Myself. along with other people I talked to. and even people I overheard talking in the crowd were all somewhat surprised at the fact that the ‘ Richmond Hill Midgets (aged 16 and 1’7) went as far as they did. Even some of the players were a little mesmer- ized at the thought of actually going into a grand championship game for a tournament. Of course, the tournament in question was the first annual Midget All-Star Richmond Hill Tourn- ament. sponsored by the Richmond Hill Legion. Branch 375. which was held last Sunday. The tournament had been rained out on two previous occasions, and earlier in the week the long range forecast predicted showers for Sunday. But. the showers did not materialize. and it turned out to be a beautiful day for baseball. As for those amazing midgets, who captured the “B” championship. it was almost a Cinderella story. Saturday, the midgets had taken part in the Barrie Tournament, with Chucker Stan Woods throwing both games. SUBMARINE PITCHER The midgets opened the tournament at 9 am Sunday against a very strong Grantham (St. Cath- arines) team. One unusual feature about the Grantham pitcher, for those who are not acquainted with soft- ball down and around most of Southern Ontario. is that he pitches submarine style. Submarine is very similar to sidearm. only the ball comes at. the batter from more of an underneath angle than from the side. To make a long story short. Richmond Hill started Wayne Hillaby on the mound, but pulled him in favor of Stan Woods after several innings. The end result was Grantham won 6â€"0. with Richmond Hill managing only three hits off Pitcher Etherington. The win upped Grantham into the “A” class- ification with three. other teams, while Richmond Hill was demoted into the “B” group with three other team's. From this point on Richmond Hill caught fire , as they swept two straight games. HILL WINS WITH WOODS With Pitcher Woods on the mound the Hill team defeated Binbrook 8-6. despite a four run last inn- ing rally by the out-of-town team. Backed by Woods’ strong pitching the local lads then disposed of Oak Ridges by a score of 4-2. This advanced the Richmond Hill team into the . grand championship game. ‘ Meanwhile, Grantham was defeating Grimsby 5-1 in the “A” championship game. The stage was set for the somewhat dramatic ; rematch for the grand championship between Rich- mond Hill and Grantham. it t it The final game was decided, for all intents and purposes, by a tired Stan Woods and extremely unclutch hitting by the Richmond Hill Midgets. Things started off better for the Richmond Hillers than it had in the morning game against the same Grantham Lakers, as their second batter, Glen Polhamus. singled. The morning game saw Pitcher Etherington throw a no-hitter for three and a third innings before Polhamus broke it with a single. However. the midgets did not score in the first Inning. but Grantham did. A leadoff double, two sacrifices, and then three straight singles gave Grantham two runs, which eventually turned out to be enough to win. SEAL RICHMOND HILL‘S DOOM The next four innings were the ones that sealed Richmond Hill’s doom as the first two men reached base in each inning, but they failed to score on all four occasions. During this stretch Grantham changed pitchers as they brought in Dueck (also a submariner) in the top of the fourth with runners on first and second and none out. He struck out the side. Probably the most distressing inning for the midgets offensively had to be the fifth. Polhamus and Mesley opened the inning with walks, and Jeff Watson then singled to load the bases. The Grantham pitcher then settled down and struck out the fifth, sixth. and seventh men in the Richmond Hill order without allowing a run. it :1 Meanwhile. Grantham scored two runs on three ‘ hits in the second inning, and added six more on five hits and three errors in the fourth inning. ' " 'HILL BREAKS .IINX Finally. with the score 10-0 in favor of Grantâ€" ham heading into the seventh inning. Richmond Hill broke the string of 13 scoreless innings which the two Grantham pitchers had thrown at them. Jack Mesley opened Richmond Hill’s half of day.
