Allan Slaight Acquires Montreal Station pence Chief Crawford Answers (Continued from Page it use whencyer this will be useful. “Some Toronto news re- ports of Montreal are a little too flamboyant. We intend to get a little less hysterical viewpoint," said Slaight. A native of (Salt, Slaight, moved to Saskatchewan in ilie mid-1940.»; when his faâ€" ther bought a newspaper in Moose Jaw. A brother went into the newspaper business and now holds an important executive position with the Thompson Newspapers. one of the nation‘s largest news- paper chains. But Allan Slaight went into the news side of broadcasting, first starting with CHAB Moose Jaw in 1948. Then he went to a radio news job in Edâ€" monton and on to CHUM To- ronto in 1958. At Canadian Radio-Tele- vision Commission hearings in May CFGM President and General Manager Slaight said his proposed acquisition of CFOX would provide an important link with CFGM in Richmond Hill. He said would kctip in closcr touch with developments in Toron- to and keep CFGM listeners informed about developâ€" ments in Quebec. He sought permission to buy about 80 percent of CFOX for $300.- 000, with Gordon Sinclair ,lr.. CFOX President. to keep 3 IO percent interest. Slaight promised at the hearing to improve the sta- tion's news and public al-- fairs programming and said it was his intention to intro- duce a music policy featur- ing the New Country Music. He said he would increase the station's full time staff to 24 from 20 and increase part time help from four to six. Sinclair said at the Ottawa hearing that attempts were made to sell CFOX in the Montreal area but that a suitable buyer couldn't be found. In July lQTl the CRTC turned down an ap- plication by Slaight‘s former station‘s President Allan Wa» tcrs of Cl-IUM in Toronto to buy CFOX. On July 13 the CRTC anâ€" an n o u n c e d approval of Slaight’s application. noting It was ldl\lll;2 into account his expressed intention to maintain and develop indeâ€" pendent and community- oriented radio for the Momâ€" real West Island area. It noted it had taken into ac» count the fact that no local firms expressed an interest in buying CFOX despite the fact it had been for sale for some time. At the saiiic time the CP- 'l'C announced apprmal of an application by Lakcshore Broadcasting Limited. the then owners of CFOX. to transfer 9.307 or 9.3 percent of its common shares to Siti- clair Broadcan Management Limited from Gordon Sincâ€" lair Jr..
