The fire occurred at the home of William Burbidge, RR 2, Woodbridge, and caused $7,000 damage to the house and $3000 damage to the contents. ' Vaughan ifire officials said the blaze was believed to have started in the electrical system. Six fire trucks. four tankers and two‘pumpers, answered the call. which was turned in at 9:52 pm. AUGUST BLAZE Last August. a late night barn fire at the farm, which burned for six hours, destroyed 400 pigs and caused an estimated $35,- 000 damage. Another fire in Vaughan also believed to have started from a fault in the electrical system, caused about $400 damage to a truck in the CN yards at Keele Street and Highway 7, Septem- ber 5 about 2:50 am. Admittedly in some a sort of wide-eyed daze may still be detected, but then it is a well known fact that such parent-preached joys as ‘i'egaining‘, a feeling of purpose’ and ‘meeting all your old friends’ only last, in most cases, for a period of no longer than two days, after which they are simply taken for granted, and it's back to the old grind. With this consideration in mind, the first week of school emerged not as gloom or shock-ridden as might have been expected. Everyone, it seems ad- justs if not happily, quickly. 11 v A" J"... -..L~ I’L‘uvu ... "v- -._.r News involving all sorts of Volleyball try-outs, field hockey teams, yearbook plans, a Student Coun- cil meeting and Sadie Hawkins Golf Tournament filtered endlessly through the RA. each morning. Three highly controVersial subjects for the school year 72/.73 appear to be dances, student cards and fund-raising. _ I uAAu v v; Eur“.-._ 7.“ Student cards, which in the past have been, to quote our president, “as useful as boots on a duckâ€, are this year necessary i-f a student wishes to play on any athletic team, or join any school-sponsored club. .1110! LIHU- As usual, fund-raising seems the most helpful and undeniably necessary actively we students can partake in collectively, outside of actually attend- ing school. But for reasons unknown, We are allowed only one such activity outside the'school, and one inside, so limitations have to be taken into consid- eration. There were lots of suggestions however, including a slave auction, dance marathon and car- bash. Although the school body is smaller this year (600 rather than 670) there is still a good-sized new crop of grade 9's, fearfully awaiting the horrors of an impending initiation. Throughout grade 8 they have most likely been warned of some of the fright- ening duties handed out to various culprits in the past, and as if to heighten these probably already exaggerated fears the grade 13’s have publicly an- nounced their intention to hold a meeting in which strategy for that day‘will be planned. 0 ,. LI.:_ £.'.-_L And that ends the list of events for this first week of school, which not surprisingly, was very much like any other. It seems no matter how drastic the changes, tragedies or break throughs of the out- side world, school must, and always will, go on.
