News (Photo by Stuart's Studio) Dedicate New Canadian Reformed Church A 20-year-old dream became a reality for the congregation of Bethel Canadian Reformed Church November 22, when the official presen- tation of the newly-built church at the west end of Thornridge Drive, Thornhill, was held. Until making do in rented recently the congregation has been quarters and although they have been using the new church for some months, decided to wait until the organ was installed before holding the official ceremony. The service of Rev. Francois Kouwenhoven is recognized by a bronze plaque. He was pastor throughout the years of struggle of this congregation which is a Dutch Church with its traditions in the Reformation and Calvinistic In the picture in front of the in its beliefs. plaque (left to right). are John Van Velzen, l chairman of the building committee; Rev. Dirk VanderBoom, the present pastor; and Siep 1 Smilde, chairman of the organ committee. Socially Speaking In Thanh/7i Library News The Markham Public Lib- rary Board on November 21 received the go-ahead from the town council for reno- vations and a 700 square foot addition to the Thornhill Branch. This permission brought to an end a crisis which had been in the mak- ing for five years. says a lib- rary official. The present library facil- ities. in a 121-ycar-old house in the centre of the old vil- lage. had. after many make- shift solutions to provide room for an evergrowing load of books and patrons, finally reached the satura- tion point. The library was operated out of 850 square feet of public space. serving more than half the popula- tion of the Town of Mark- ham 123.0001 and some of Vaughan's pepulation on the west side of Yongc Street. ' With no land yet purch- ased for the construction of a new library and thus no relief in sight for one or two' years at least, the board was. faced with the prospect of1 looking for new rental quar- ters and closing the present, building. An announcement of clos- ing posted at the library on. November 10 evoked a storm of protest. In no uncertain terms through letters,‘ phone calls to the board.. council members and libraryi staff. and through petitions‘ and delegation to Council â€"; the library‘s supporters be-i came suddenly vocal. i If there had ever been any: doubt of the library's import-T ance to the community, it was quickly dissipated in the; two days the notice remain-i ed pOSted. As a result of thisi expression of opinion. the' board felt it must go to coun-i cil again for funds to exe-‘ cute required improvements. After meetings with inter- ested library supporters and‘ with the council. the neces- sary funds were voted to pur-i chase and install at the back‘ of the property on Colborne. Street. a relocatable building‘ which can be moved or sold when it is no longer needed. With the addition. the lib- rary will soon have a total of 1.610 square feet of public space. Although this is still far from an acceptable stand- ard. it is a considerable im- provement. It is hoped this will be sufficient for reason- able service until a new library can be built to pro- vide properly co-ordinated services for the Thornhill community.
