Charlebois doesn’t enjoy the same degree of success in English Canada but a look at his mus- ical accomplishments indicates that he is bound to make headway in that direction sooner or later. I mean. how long can you ignore a singer who has put out over ten albums and sold more than a million dollars worth of records? All that â€" despite a lack of support from the English-speak- ing population. Charlebois has had top hit songs in Mexico and Italy, without the aid of translaâ€" tions, and he also enjoys much popularity in France. He has, however, met with limited suc- cess in countries like Canada, England and the United States. I l Charlebois has managed to avoid the trap that many artists fall into â€" turning out album after album, and having each one sound the same. He keeps a lot of variety flowing through his work. Take for instance, his international hit “Linbergh†and his French-Canadian hit “Conceptionâ€. If you didn’t know that both of these tunes were written by the same artist, you’d certainly never guess it. “Linbergh†is a slow, searching song which uses the sound of a jet taking off in the background. “Conceptionâ€, on the other hand, tells a humorous story in short‘ verse and rhyme, with flowing melody. In a music world that is ever-changing and opening up new horizons. it appears that an indi- vidual like Charlebois might prove quite success- ful. With no language barriers to hold him down, he might well live up to the title of Superfrog. As the music director for one of Toronto’s leading rock stations, once said to me: “International Acceptance â€" that’s the acid testâ€. It looks like Superfrog just might pass with honors. You’ve heard of Superman and Superfly, but what about Superfrog? No, he’s not a new car- toon character â€" he’s a French-Canadian pop singer. If you read last week’s Jam Session, then you’ll know what I’m talking about. If not, keep reading . . . Superfrog is really Robert Charlebois, a pop idol who has quite possibly had more written about him in the Montreal Press, than Prime Minister Trudeau. He seems to have a special knack for headlines, and during the past seven years, has publicly expressed his views on every- thing from music to politics. But it is his music for which he is chiefly known. His songs are personal ones which reflect the French way of life. It is no wonder that his name has become a household word, throughout most of Quebec. So for the past couple of years, Charlebois has been trying to break into the English market. He has done several French concerts in Toronto which have been quite well attended. Now, he has gone a step further and recorded his first English single called “Hallowe’en in Hollywoodâ€. It has recently been released by Barclay Records, distributed in Canada by Polydor. The song is about a poet who thinks about quitting poetry and writing a song that sells a million copies. Will “Hallowe’en in Hollywood†sell a million? Only time will tell . . . And when it comes to trying out a lot of new things in music, Charlebois is right up there on top. He has mixed sounds from every language in an attempt to create a universal sound. He also injects synthetic sounds into much of his work, similar to the simulated jet take-off in “Linberghâ€. On his latest album, he uses Morse code in a cut called “Fu Man Shuâ€. And he is still experimenting. 28 By PATRICIA FAGAN “Superfrog†â€" Robert Charlebois THE LIBERAL, Richmond Hill, Ontario, Thursday, Dec. 14, 1972 Honeymoon In Niagara Falls Jam Session MR. AND MRS.
