24 If album designers put their energies into designing creative liner notes, they might find it quite challenging. Like on Kris Kristofferson’s latest LP “Jesus Was A Capricorn". the back of the jacket has been designed to look like a bulletin board. Pinned alongside pictures of Kris and his friends, is a hand-written note that describes briefly the kind of music he's been doing: ’til now and tells us that Rita Coolidge is accompanying him throughout this recording. "That's all I‘m going to tell you about “Jesus Was A Capricorn" or I‘ll find myself without a column for next the listener. for music cannot play without your ears. Lorence Hud That's just enough to give a personal touch to an album. Some records display the lyrics to their songs on the back or inside covers. This also gives the buyer an idea of what to expect on the record. week ! The artist isn't important and the music is supposed to speak for itself. No one can deny the importance of visual impact on the buyer, but liner notes also have their value. Like the other day, when I picked up Santana's newest album “(‘aravanserai". I had been under the impression that Santana had broken up. Was this album the same kind of music as their other albums? I opened up the centrespread and dis- covered a poem all about the universe â€" an indication to me that this album would feature a different. more progressive sound for Santana. So the liner note doesn’t have to take the standard biographical approach. Even a couple of lines of poetry will give the buyer an indication of the emotional tone and feeling of the album. Take for instance, the little \‘erse on the hack of Lorence Hud's first album: A play is but a script until it has I’ll never forget the first Beatle Album I ever bought. It was called “Twist And Shout" and practically every kid in the neighborhood had a copy of it. For that matter, we were all author- ities on the Beatles, especially when it came to telling stories of their private lives and their rise to fame. We saw them on the Ed Sullivan Show, we read about them in the teen gossip magazines and in the newspapers, we bought their records, and we read the liner notes on the back of their album covers. You don't see liner notes on album jackets too much today. They were used extensively throughout the '50's and the ’60's, when it was in fashion to write a biography of the recording artist on the back of his album. Just from read- ing the back of “Twist and Shout" I discovered that John Lennon liked steak and chips. Paul McCartney liked black turtle-necked sweaters, George Harrison favoured blonde girls and Ringo Starr disliked Donald Duck. Interesting little tidbits to acquaint the public with these new singing stars! Liner notes have gone out of style these past few years, which is strange, when you consider the increased competition in the music business. With so many different bands recording, one finds it hard to distinguish one name from an- other. Liner notes might help the buyer identify easier with the type of music being offered on an album. Bin album designers seem to he concentratâ€" ing more on outdoing each other with weird jacket designs: Art and color is the medium.
