Children from playground groups at Hughson Park and Victoria Square Community Centre have not played all last month. They have been making handicrafts which they will sell this Friday (August 10) at a penny car- nival to be held at the Vic- toria S q u a r e Community Centre. They hope to make enough money to buy at least one small rabbit for the new Toronto Zoo. There will be a white ele- phant table, a popcorn booth. a bean bag contest and other games. from 1-4 pm at Vic- toria Square Park. Cheryl Tennyson. Paula Wilson and Kathy Cunning~ ham are leading play activi- ties at the parks this sum- mer, and hope the com- munity will support the chil- dren. Mrs. Beatrice Taft of Belle- ville has been in the neigh- borhood visiting her sisters. Mrs. Russell Burr and Mrs. John Brown. Keith and ~Bev Carson and their children have been at their cottage near Parry Sound for the past few weeks. Jean Scott captured earlier in the sum- mer the York-Simcoe Ladies' Singles title and her other achievements this season are: ‘ At Richmond Hill on July 15 Ron Coady and Jean were defeated in the quarter fin- als of the York-Simcoe Mix- ed Doubles by Jimmy Hay and Sandy Mitchell of Bar- rie who went on to win this event In partnership with Carol Coady, Jean reached the final of the York-Simcoe Ladies’ Doubles held July 8 at Aurora. but were defeated by Joyce Jones and Helen Butterworth of Aurora. Among the 70 present were Mrs. Tim Paterson, the Bill Hood family, Bob and Mary Lou Hood, Keith and Millie Hood. Jim and Elsie Hood, Margaret and John Brumwell and family. the Harry Boad- ways of Uxbridge, and others from Delhi. St. Catharines. Oakville, St. Thomas and the Toronto area. Bob and Janet Cunning- ham and their family have been camping weekends at provincial camp grounds. and hope to travel north for a vacation later this month. ust 9 Reg and Joy Crawford's new home at Sharon is near- ing completion. and they will be putting on the finishing touches during their vacation this month. In the York-Simcoe Lea- gue we have won three matches â€" a close one with Newmarket June 25, a tie in matches, and Thomhill win- ning by one game. We de- feated Aurora 9-1 July 19 in a home game and then on August 2 defeated Newmar- ket 8-2. We play Richmond Hill in our next fixture Aug- Don and Dorothy Reesor and their family returned this week from their Hali- burton cottage. League play continues â€" our majors team lies in fourth ‘position in the In- ter-County League at pres- ent having lost to Three Valleys, won against Bramp- ton and tied with Richmond Hill. Our junior inter- county team finished the sea- son in fourth place â€" quite an achievement to bring the" team up six places from last season. Congratulations to all the boys on the team for their fine play and a sincere thank you to Bill Perry for his coaching of the jun- ior team. At the Junior Davis Cup Tournament held at Aurora July 28-29 young players from Thornhill did very well indeed. Janet and Judy Mc- Lean played in the final of the under 18 girls -â€" Janet won this match and also won the under 16 girls event. Deidre Lennon and Vicky Robinson reached the final of the under 14 girls â€" Vic- ky, won this. In the under 14 boys Dave Audet reached‘ the finals and in the under 12 boys Alan Grant retained his title. Patsy McLean was the winner in the under 12 girls. Congratulations to all of you! to the semi-final of the con- solation round of the men's singles but had to default to go on vacation. The singles title was won by John All- port of Rosethom.
