Gillespie of Ministry of Edu-' cation, Region 8. told York County Roman Catholic School Board September 18. FOUR. 0R. FIVE YEARS “You can take it for gran-i ted that within a period of not very many years, (four or five), this country will take the last step to intro- duce the metric system of measurement and the impe- rial system will have disap- peared forever.“ he said. He noted that the United Sta- tes and Canada are the only two major countries still using the imperial system. f‘Probably Canada is wai- ‘ting for the USA. to come to a definite decision," he suggested. Mr. Gillespie reported that the Ministry of Educa- tion has set up a section wihch has done a lot of work on the metric system and is really ready to ga. “However there are politi- cal implications and my surmise is that if Ontario makes the jump on its own, it will have to foot the bill. If this province waits for Ottawa, there may be a lot of money available to fi- nance the costs of the change." The cost of changing to the metric system in ele- mentary schools will not be great, he stated. “You can introduce the metric system very simply by burning all yard sticks and buying me- ter sticks." IN METRO SCHOOLS He also told the board that the Metro Toronto Board of Education is in- troducing the complete met- ric system into primary grades this year. “If the country is going metric in a few years time, abandoning AURORA â€"â€" Council has au- thorized spending $5,000 to complete renovations on the Subway Sideroad community building, since a federal Lo- cal Initiatives Program was insufficient to cover all the work. BA'ITE RY Firestone LIFETIME SUPREME $1 ,00 Installation Charge £93531") STORES \l INSTALLED the imperial system, can any school board afford to start youngsters on the im- perial system and then later on make them change to metric?" he asked. mi The speaker admitted that parents may be confused, “but I don’t think it will be anything as significant as the confusion over the new math. Youngsters will find it a lot easier. It certainly is a lot easier to move the decimal point than to divide by 12, but will cause you, me and the teachers some problems." He suggested that by in- troducing the metric system in 'the primary grades next year, school boards will be- nefit by the experience of Toronto schools this year. RIGHT AND WRONG There are two ways to in- troduce the metric system, he said, the wrong way and? the right way. “The wrong way is to convert from in- ches to centimeters. It’s murder for the youngsters, dreadful for the teachers and you get the wrong ans- wer, anyway. The proper way is for the youngsters to get to know the few basic units with a concept of the size of each. If he has a good concept he can operate on 1the metric system better than he can on the imperial system.” It was planned to intro- duce the metric system to teachers of the York Catho- lic system at a professional development day September 24. More metric workshops will be held for the teachers before introduction of the subject in the classrooms, it was noted. “Your problem is to decided whe'n”“fo""lhtr0- duce it, to what extent and in what grades,” Mr. Gilles- pie told the trustees. Mr. Gillespie also recom- mended that copies of “Why Johnny Can't Add", by Dr. Morris Kline of New York, internationally known ma- thematician, be made avai- lable to trustees and tea- ching staff. “It is the mOSt comprehensive analysis I have ever read," he said. - “27 Days in September” *Left Scene After Walker Hurt A man who seriously in- jured a pedestrian and left the scene without stopping July 1 east of Thornhill at Steele", Avenue and Red Lea Avenue at 9:55 pm, pleaded guilty in Richmond Hill Pro- vincial Court September 14. Hodgins’ lawyer said his client didn’t see anybody and didn‘t know he'd hurt any- one. But he was pleading guilty because he’d heard the bump and had gone on with- out investigating. A civil suit was pending in the case, he told the court.
