When Pierre Elliot Tru- deau pitched the words, “fud- dle-duddle", across the floor of the House of Commons some time ago he not only shook up the loyal members of the oppositionâ€"he also in- spired Comrade Danny Kelly and his cohorts who were busy forming a Legion soft- ball team at the time. When the King Township RC Board built Holy Name, a plastic line was provided to connect the school with the King City water supply. The board also suggested as part of the agreement, that when a permanent waterline is installed on the road al- lowance, a connection be provided to the school with- out cost to the board. Notwithstanding that the loyal Opposition claimed the Prime Minister had hurled a more disrespectivc remark, the Legion crew preferred to go along with Hansard. “We thought it was a good expres- sion, so we named our team In accepting the offer, the board asked that special at- tention be paid to the safeâ€" ty of the approaches to the school’s entrance and exit Idescribed as extremely dan- gerous at present), with vi- sibility being iscreased to at least 500 feet in both direc- tions during the reconstruc- tion of the King Sideroad for which the strip of land is necessary. It was also sug- gested that the combined entrance and exit, when re- constructed, be wide enough that a bus going out and one coming in can pass. so that a bus turning east would not have to cross the centre of the road. An offer to purchase a little more than half an acre of land of the Holy Name School site in King, made by the Region of York, was accepted by the York Coun- ty Roman Catholic School Board September 18. The price offered was $2,060 (at $4,000 per acre) and the Re- gion also stated its willing- ness to pay the legal costs and to reconstruct the en- trance and relocate the gate- posts. Half Acre Of Land At Holy Name School Brings Board $2,060 Legion Ball Tournament This Weekend At Crosby, Town Park the ‘Fuddle Duddles’". said Dannyâ€"He didn‘t state what the ball team would have been called if Hansard had agreed with the opposition. Ever since. however, the Legion men‘s ball team has been actively running around various local diamonds pre- sumably without the home plate being loaded. Managed by Comrade Don Quinton. the Fuddlc Duddles play in what Don calls a “no name league", of which Don is also presi- dent. League teams comprise Stoui‘fville Legion, the Fud- dlc Duddles. Ratcliff's. Au- rora Legion and York Reg- ional Police. Last year the average age of players was 47. This year the average age is down to “between 35 and 36” said Don. The Fuddle Duddles ended up the current season in third place in the league by winning 10 games and losing 10. At the time of going to press they were tied one game each with Aurora for the playoff championship. But the big event of the sea- son comes up this weekend. The Flash (Tim Saul). Twinkle Toes (Haddy Eakins), Soupy (-Bud Chapman), Hom- er (Frank Tough), Bull Moose Saturday and Sunday ten teams will participate in the Legion men's first ball tourâ€" nament at the town park and Crosby Park. Entered so far are Legion Branches from Aurora. Stouffville, Clare- mont, Orillia, Agincourt and, of course. the Fuddle-Dud- dles. Canadian Forces Base. Downsview, has also entered. Tourney Organizer Don Quinton, advises the first game will commence at 9 am Saturday with eight games being played in both parks Finals will be played Sunday in the town park. Two tro- nhies will be up for grabs donated by Norm Smith Realty. There is no charge for admission and all inter- ested persons are welcome to attend. Spectators may recognize our home plate heroes by their colorsâ€"yellow and blue sweaters with blue pants hav- ing a white stripe. And for the benefit of the color-blind, Comrade Cliff Dunbar sub- mits a list of Fuddle Duddle nicknames by which team players are identified vocally duringr play and otherwise. They are as follows: legion Reports Branch 375, Royal Canadian Legion By Eric Chapman (Gary Moss).
