AUCTION SALE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13 HELD AT M-F FARMS, MILLIKEN Full or Part Time Tï¬irflw clw15 c1w15 BY TOM DAVEY Liberal Drama Critic Richmond Hill Curtain Club began its new sea-son with a magnificent perfor- mance of Leonard Gershe's Butterflies Are Free. Director Gerry Crack has wrung -a flawless result from the cast which makes the evening a truly emotional experience. The play begins with ma- ny of vthe lightweight lines which have made television sitcoms such a wasteland. But not for long. The author has a wickedly winty pm which the actors exploilt with great finesse as the play unfolds in a shab- by New Yo-rk apartment. SURE TOUCH Efforrtlessly, he gives a convincing portrayal of a sensitive, in-telligenlt young man who remains unsorry for himself. deSpite his aff- liction. Terry Harford gives a su- perlative performance as the blind Don Baker striking out on his own for the first time in his life. By Butterflies Cast He delivers his witty res- ponses with a sure touch â€" yet there are dramatic mo- ments when one" can swear ‘there are tears glistening in those sightlesvs eyes. B-onni'e Sheppard plays the s‘catterbrarined Jill Tan- ner whose life and back- ground sharply contrast with those of her blind lover. With thoughtless abandon, she gives herself easily, and withdraws herself clumsily, causing great pain -to her new lover. WAg-a‘in a great perfor- mance. As Don Baker's mother, Pat Kanttaroff has some of the best lines in the play and she does not waste a syllable. While we resent 'her in- terference. initially. we gra- dually warm to her and de- velop a gru‘dging respect for her penetrating ripostes. Hers is a great performance. While she does not deny she is a middle aged square from weal-thy Scarsdale, She shows that not all the witty words and wisdom come from the love-bead gen-era- tion. The part of Ralph Austin. the drama prodUcer who gets Jill to move into his apartment, is a minor one in this play. David Smith makes full use of the limiâ€" ted time he is on the stage and gets the laughs as he outlines the plot of his off- Broadwa-y production. Thé sét .of Butterflies is outstanding and an authen- tic backdrop to the actors. Not only are there some real Braille books in evi- dence but the faucets actual- lv work when the players me the kiichen.
