It is not an abstract idea but a very concreme ex- perience with a long history. Catholicism is always chang- ing always different, Father Dan Donovan 'toLd members of York County Roma-n- Ca- tholic School Board and a score of teachers from Ithe local system at the board’s November 6 meeting. He was talking about Catho- licity and Catholicism and developed .his address along the Catholic principle, the distinctive traits of Catholi- cism. its strength and its weaknesses; Catholicism to- day, what today brings to historical Catholicism; and some problems of Catholics. three lines -â€" a few ideas of DIFFERENT TIMES Referring to St. Augustine and to St. Thomas Aquinas he showed how the church had developed in different ways in different times. He referred to am triumphant counter-reformation of (the 16th Century, as well as to other areas to further illus- trate the differences. Roman Catholicism ‘ ‘ vigil-{51: ‘Donovan, 21 theolo- gy professor at St. Michael’s College, UniveLrsity of Toron- In the beginning emphasis was placed on the simple teaching of Jesus and the preaching of His disciples about His life. The early C-hnistians weren’t too con- cerned abou‘t church buildL ings, dogma and rituals, he said. ’ DEVELOPMENT As the church started to settle down for its long jour- ney into history it had 1.0 create a fundamental struc- ture, sort out «he fundamenâ€" tal principles 'to enable it to survive. Thus Ithe church in the second century became quite different from that in the ï¬rst. During this period came the development of the scriptures, >the solidifying of sacramental ritual, the sortâ€" in-g out of the complex lea- dership of :the church wihc new emphasis on ont‘hoâ€" doxism. VICTORIA SQUARE NEWS This church was a very remarkable creation, accord- ing to the slpeaker, recogniz- ing that if the gospel was to survive .in the midst of con- flict it must recognize the fact that the principles and dogma were developed to serve and protect the simple gospel message. The role of the bishops and of the Pope was designated with the re- cognition that church leader- ship was necessary as a function or service to the gospel message, to protect it from the destructive forces of the world. CONSTANT CHANGE He pointed out that Oatho- l licism is open for change â€" constantly â€" and that it is not the reality but is to serve reality. He warned of certain inherent dangers â€"â€" that regular ritual and pre- cise forms of worship can be a help to the individual but can easily slip into ritualism as an end in itself. The prob- lem of Christian truth, to adapt the gospel message in each age, has existed in all ages. It can be abused in verbal orthodoxism â€" in the belief that certain words are the faith. They are not the faith at all. they are to fa- cilirtarte the building up of faith. Part of 'tihe Catholic Prin- ciples has always been dis- cipline a good thing, giving a sense of continuity. How- ever if misunderstood and degraded it can become an abuse and a source of evil. CHURCH-STATE Speaking of Catholicism tOday. he recalled that in the ï¬rst three centuries Christians were a minority. were often persecuted and were not accepted in Roman life. In the fourth century this changed and a new era and a new experience in Christianity began when Christians ceased to be the minority and became the majority. Catholicism and culture were one. The church and state worked together and reinforced each other. In Europe there is still great conflict on how to disestab- CORRESPONDENT: MRS. W. SANDLE RR. 2.
