Smith Juniors Sink Travelways Thornhill Church League’s First Dance Of Season Sold Out By MARGARET HOUGHTON Telephone 889-3073 Although this is not a social column, just a note to say the Thornhill Church League’s first dance of the season was by all. A happy crowd dance hall, and enjoyed a sell-out, and enjoyed filled the Fairview Mail a generous buffet. The disc jockey had some difficulty in convincing the crowd the dance had act ually ended at 1 pm. Thanks to Kaye Morris and her committee for once again saving the tickets and the like. SQUIRTS (8-year-olds) No score sheets received. TYKES (9-year-olds) Reusse Construction 3 Roxson Contractors 0 Reusse Construction blankâ€" ed Roxson Contractors 3-0, with Reinhard Reusse in nets. It was a family affair with Ricky Reusse scoring the game‘s first goal. Ken Curley assisted. Keeping it in the family, the next two goals were scored by John McLel- lan for Vaughn McLellan’s boys. Brian Masson got an assist. Fisher Brothers 4 North York Trophy 0 Another Tyke shut-out was Fred Fisher Brothers over North York Trophy 4-0. Andy Halpin opened. Steve Living- stone assisted on the first goal and followed with two himself. Richard Parkinson also scored with Miles Pitt assisting, Mark Wilder was in the nets for the first place Fisher Brothers. Mike Darby from Ronnie Claring- bold followed. Peter Arcan- ‘geli from Darby then made it 3-0. Bill O'Brien then answered for Poly-Converters, assisted by Craig Still. Tuckey from Kirkpatrick then scored the THORNHILL CHURCH league from candy bars, lsecond goal and Claringbold, from Darby and Arcangeli finished off the game. John Kalm opened and assist-‘ ed on the second goal, with Stephen Herbert turning on the red light. Norm Carotte from Andrew Holding scored Shoppers‘ third marker. Gary Curley notched the final in Shoppers' best game to date. The lone answer from NS Smith came from Timmy Maxwell early in the second period. Kirwin followed with what turned out to be the winner, from Kennedy, The lone second period goal was scored for Dickie Dee by Jamie Gibbon from Donnie Mosher. but the tie eluded them. and Thornhill. Sam Billich made it a tied game, when assisted by John Wilkes. Jerome Flanagan from Dave D‘Agostini won the game in the first period and no fur- ther scoring took place. Fisher Brothers 1 is alone in second Shanahans 0 Only one goal got past two goalies, as Fisher edge-d Shanahans 1-0. John Parker from Paul Wright got a goal in past Danny Lalonde in Shanahan nets. Shanahan nets. Steve Geiger kept Fisher the winner. MIDGETS Dodds 3, Japan 2 Dodds’ Danny Fogarty and Rob Morrow combined for three goals to down Japan Car Sales 3-2. A close game for two periods broke wide open in the third per- iod, with penalties and goals following in close succession. John Malone opened for Wib Smith. assisted by Keith Bagg. Travelways' Norm Sharpe answered to tie the game in the second period, assisted by Joel Columby. John Stevens from Dave Nicholas took Wib Smith ahead again. Paul Nichols from Malone put Smith ahead, to be followed by three more goals by Stev- ens. Malone put another in the nets for good measure, John Liversage and Bagg getting assists. The final Travelways goal was by Mark Woolnough, from Columby. Thornhill Lions 3 Reusse Construction 2 A hat-trick by Steve Med- dick lead the Thomhili Lions in a 3-2 win over Reusse Construction. Doug Holubec, Mark Kearns, Brad Kirkpat- rick and Al Jackson are credited with assists. Answering in the third period were Chris Churney and Steve Davis to attempt a tie. Minor Bantam Selects 'I‘ie Martingrove Les Buckler's Margell Flyers took on Martingrove Minor Bantams of the MTHL. and answered each of their goals with one of their own. Final score was 3- all. Ian Billich got away two, and Mike Parkinson one in this nice showing. Getting credit for assists were Drew Broadbridge with two, Jamie Gibbon, Mike Mudie, Doug Heron and Bob Dionne with one apiece. OMHA MAJOR PEEWEES Thornhill 2, Aurora 1 It was the third game in a row for these two teams. From the opening face-off, iti was apparent it was to be a rough game. Aurora is a very aggressive club, but the Thunderbirds showed , they could handle this type‘ of .play. It was a penalty filled game, with both teams often short two‘ players. Aurora opened the scorn ing early in the first period. Robbie Spittle then tied it up, with an 'assist going to Randy Barr. David Morley then scored the winning goal, on a pass from Mike Danekert. OMHA Minor Bantams H&S Reliance Minor Ban- sor is off to a flying start. winning 5, tying two, and losing only one, prior to the start of the 1973-74 hockey season. Thornhill 4, Orillia 2 Outstanding goalâ€"tending proved to be the major dif- ference in this contest, as Jeff Webber turned aside 24. shots, many at close range, to foil the often-frustrated Orillia shooters. The accur- ate eye of Paul Moffatt and the great persistence of Jim Bell brought the crowd to their feet, as both scored two goals. Bill Buckler assisted Bell in the clear. Bell beat the Barrie goalie with accur- ate shots to the top right hand corner. Scott Howson assisted twice on Moffatt’s goals while the hard-skating Scott Martin assisted on one. Barrie’s Minor Bantams Double Thornhill 6-3 For more than two per- iods, Ed Wind'sor’s buzzâ€"saws proved to .be more than a match for the strong-skating precision - passing Barrie club. With Thornhill trail-I ing 3-2 in the third period, Greg Warga tied matters up with a blistering shot from the point. Then Barrie took over, shooting three unan-I swered third period goals. Second period: Play was even until 11:55, when Camp Borden scored on a deflection and again at 12:45 to take a 3 to 1 lead. Third Period: Camp Borden had no intention of letting Thornhill come back. They kept the play in Thornhill’s area another deflection. but Camp Borden came 13:30 to end the game. Play of the game: Davidson, Wright and Pasek. They are starting to move. Thornhill 2, Aurora 2 , Thornhill Thunderbirds' again met a very tough Aurora team November 10. Time and again Thornhill swarmed around the Aurora net only to be frustrated by Aurora‘s goalie. Late in the first period. Aurora broke away, passed ahead to put a player all alone in front of our net but Regan Gorman came up to meet the chal- lenge and made a beautiful save to end the period. Second period: Play was very well until the 6:36 mark when Steven Tschipper picked up the puck, passed to Kevin Goble who put Troy Bradley in the clear. Troy made no mistake putting the puck into Aurora's net to take the lead and end the period. Third period: Aurora op- ened ‘ very strongly scoring on a scramble at 0:27 to tie the game. Play was very even until the 6:38 mark when Aurora got a breakaway. German made the save but the puck bounced away from him and before our defence had a chance to clear the puck, Aurora's player put the puck into Thornhill’s net to take the lead. Back and forth the teams went looking for an opening which came for Thornhill at 13:45 when Rob McLelland passed to Steven Tschi‘pper who passed to Troy Bradley who put the puck into the net, past a startled Aurora goalie to tie up and end the game. Play of the game: Regan Gorman’s breakaway save. MINOR PEEWEES Barrie 3, Thomhill 1 Thornhill Minor Peewees lost to Barrie November 7 by a 3-1 score. Barrie came out ing on the net to take a 2-0 lead after the first period. Barrie scored the only goal of the second period when the puck went into the net off a Thornhill defenseman’s foot. Fisher Bros. Minor Peewees scored the only goal of the Grant Davidson from Rob McLelland scored at 12:55 to keep our hopes up third period when Mark Wilt- shire redirected Steven Sim‘s pass 'behind the Barrie goalie. Thornhill 4, Orillia 2 Again Thornhill started slowly being outshot 5-1 in the first five minutes. How- ever Thornhill received a penalty at the 5:02 mark and for the next three minutes stopped Orillia from getting a shot on the net. Thornhill scored their first goal at 10:20 when Paul Howson got the draw in the right circle and passed to Rick Seeley in the slot. Seeley backhanded the puck in off the goalie's pads. In the second period Thorn- hill carried the game to Oril- lia but couldn't score until 13:02, Again it was a Seeley backhand from Howson and Jim Jones. In the third period, Thorn- hill seemed to let down, feel- ing they had the game won. But two quick goals by Oril- lia within one minute tied the score at the five minute mark.
