Thornhill was hard-press- ed in the final 58 seconds as Barrie hemmed them in their own end in a frantic but unsuccessful effort to score the equalizer. MAJOR BANTAMS Thornhill 2. Aurora 1 Aurora jumped into the lead and it was not until the 13 minute mark of the sec- ond period that Thornhill evened it up on a goal by Rick Buchan, assisted by John Bennett and David Barr. The winning marker came in the third period on a hard shot by Scott Burk- hart. John Bennett assisted. The Aurora netminder had a busy night as the Thunderbirds outshot them 20-5. MIDGET Thornhill 7,~Orillia 2 It must have been a tir- ing day. December 22, for the Orillia Midgets, who, after playing a morning game in the Silver Stick Tournament, travelled to Markham Centennial Arena where they were greeted by a buzzsaw in the form of the Thornhill Glaverbels. The Thornhillers showed Orillia no sympathy as they jumped into a 3-0 lead in the first on goals by Ross Gordon from Rob Browning, Bill Sim unassisted and Jim McLaughlin from Paul Bernardi and Colin Herd. Orillia scored first in the second but Thornhill replied with two more by Gordon from Al Berryman and Browning and Bernardi from Brian James and Jim Renâ€" nicks, to make it 5-1. The third period saw the local boys keep the pressure on. In- cluded as part of the proâ€" gram were the Music makers, a community band from the Thornhill area composed of students from grade three to nine. A major difficulty cropped up when it was discovered two drummers from this hand were snowed in! But this was remedied by Berry lanuzzi taken over. He is a former student of Royal Orâ€" chard who came out to be part of the audience! The Royal Orchard band included 70 students who for the past three months have taken in- structicn in their own spare ‘ime. 2 BANDS ALTERNATE The two bands opened by playing alternate selections. Tony Muia. a student from conducted the Musicmakcrs. Bill Buchan, the senior vocal, Orchard l Road School, conducted thel teacher of Royal schch band. The program was made up of traditional C h r i s t m a 5 songs such as “We Wish You a Merry Christmas“, “Swing- ing Old St. Nick", and carols in which the audience joined in. Nonâ€"Christmas favorites included Fiale to the New World Symphony, Rainy Days and Mondays. Glen Miller's Moonlight Serenade and more. Featured were Royal Or- chard's Joanne Crone play- ing a flute selection which she had arranged herself. Robert Bicheski and the saxophone section he teaches Robert is a Grade eight student at Royal Orchardl. ' These were two trio arrange- ments. Also the Royal Or- chard trombone quartet play- ed a four part arrangement of Aura Lee. BANDS COMBINE After the intermission the two bands were combined to C. W. If any of the latter are in need of a ride they are asked to contact another skiing enthusiast to try to get a car pool going. I'm sure a few parents would not mind taking turns to get you to the ski lodge, if necessary. The fee this year is still reasonable at $15â€"$36 with equipment provided. Barrie 3 Thornhill OMHA Bantams demonstrating an inspired comeback ability this week hustled their way to a 4-3 win over a tough Barrie team and with the victory achieved seven points of a possible eight offered in their past four games. With 2:39 remaining in the final period Barrie scored to tie the game at 3-3 and raise some doubt as to whether the local heroes could go ahead again for the two point victory before time ran out. Following the face-off the play went to the right side of the Barrie net where aggressive fore- checking by left winger Matt Nicholls recovered the puck for Thornhill. He passed to centre Pat Bertrand who re- layed it to Scott Cowie in the slot. Cowie pulled the trigger to beat the Barrie goalieand this highly pro- ductive line, eight goals in the past four games, had this exciting game. Cowie was also the marks- man on goal number one from Matt Nicholls although the architect was defence- man David Barr who orig- inated the play with a de- termined rush from deep in his own end. Thomhlll appeared to dominate the game because of solid workmanlike check- ing and excellent goaltend- ing by netminder David Howson. The two wins giVe the Glaverbels an excellent league record of 11 wins, three ties and one loss to date. JUVENILES Thornhill has kept its dig- nity in the first dozen games of the season. The up-to- date figures are eight wins, four losses and one tie. The team has scored 70 goals and has had 39 scored ag- ainst them. Of the four losses three have been to Barrie and one to Richmond Hill. Thornhill has also defeated Richmond Hill but is still looking to defeat Barrie. The team is coach- ed by Bill Sim and managed by Al Stevens. Thornhill 5, Camp Borden 4 Thornhill got off to a quick start December 18 by capitalizing on Borden’s mistakes. Thornhill had late arrivals and had to play with eight men for one period. The locals got four goals before Borden replied.
