Markham Family Life Centre, and family service agencies in Newmarket and Georgina were invited along with William Hodgson MLA York North and Dr. Matthew Dymond MLA for Ontario Rid- ing. But the planners had not con- sulted the department of meter- ology, and on the day set, the region was in the throes of its biggest blizzard of the season. Over the past year the serv- ices have survived with the aid of regional grants and fees and donations from the public after an assurance of a grant of 50 percent of cost of salaries was withdrawn by the province. In an attempt to get the agencies back on the provincial budget estimates for 1974, Don- ald Deacon MLA, York Centre arranged a meeting with provin- cial Minister of Community and Social Services Rene Brunelle to take place at Queen's Park December 20. Will their doors be open in January or will they not? c4w27 Mr. Transmission 7 Sudbury 3 The championship playoff game Sunday was a test of skating. stamina and out- standing team play and ef- fort on the part of our lads in green. A very poor and slow first period spotted the classy Sudbury club three starting goals. Mr. Transmission started to come to Sudbury halfway through the second period when Allan Graham finally bulged the twine on passes from Bailie and Sanlon. Then Captain Bailie scored with only 45 seconds to go in the middle period. After the break and pep talk, the third period was all Richmond Hill's. It all started with Sanlon poppng one off the crossbar when the period was only a few seconds old. Then at 4:25 the tying goal was potted by Lamb assisted by Sanlon and Allen Paivio. Ten minutes later the same trio got the big go-ahead counter. Less than a minute later Dysart got the real clincher. unassisted. The Sudbury goalie pulled his goalie with three minutes remaining for a faceoff in our end. Sanlon got the draw, skated to the Sud‘bury blue line and popped the pill into the open net. Forty seconds later the same stuation arose, when Captain Bailie got the puck from Brillinger and right from the Hillers’ faceoff circle backhanded the puck down the ice into the Sud- bury net. The championship pennant was awarded and each player was given a Silver Stick Medal for their tremendous effort. llllllllllllllllullllllmlllllllllllllllllllllllllll\\llll\\llllllllllllllllll That sank the Sudbury Club. Centennial Year Ends Richmond Hill’s Centen- nial Year came to a close quietly at 10 pm New Year’s Eve when Mayor William Lazenby and Norm Bielas, manager of the lo- cal branch of the Con- sumers Gas, turned out the Centennial flame Which burned all year in front of the municipal offices. The mayor spoke of the suc- cessful celebration of the 100th birthday of the town and thanked all who had participated. Wea- ther reports were warning mo- torists against going into Metro, and the mayor had a meeting of the local council scheduled for 7 pm that evening. They had received no confirmation that the meeting with the provincial representatives was to take place, so they decided .not to continue further south, the mayor said in an interview De- cember 22. the Markham Family Life Cen- tre, from the Newmarket ag- ency. but the delegation from Georgina was not able to make it to Queens Park. It was in reply to a letter he had written to Prince Edward, the Queen's youngest son, after seeing him on TV at Princess Anne’s wedding. Brumwell was particularly spectacular dur- ing the final 12 minutes of the wide-open con- test taking several seemingly sure goals off the opposition. Rams Tie Tigers 3To3 In 4th Place 3-Way Tie Richmond Hill Rams’ Goalie Doug Brum- well had a hot hand going for him Tuesday night as he stopped 42 shots to spark his teammates to a 3â€"3 tie with Aurora Tigers in a Provincial Junior “A” hockey game in Richmond Hill. When Ben Bourget, 112 Benson Avenue, Richmond Hill. had trouble with snowmobilers cutting ac- ross his corner lot in their big machines, his action was more informative than obstructive. Instead of erecting a bar- ricade, Mr. Bourget erec- ted a sign with the follow- ing message: “Snowmobile Maniacs, ,Keep off Our Property." The pen is still mightier than the sword, or the wire fence. Printers and Publishers 63 Yonge Street S. 884-1105 That was three weeks ago and Mr. Bourget hasn’t had any trouble from either the snowmobile ma- niacs, or just the ordinary kind ever since. Count on our skill The liberal When the region drew up its budget last spring it provided $70,000 as a grant to the agen- cies on the understanding that this amount would be matched by the province. early in the new year. Mean- while, he said. all they can do is to keep hoping for the best. However when the province's tight money budget was brought down, the family service agen- cies along with the hospital commission and the Ministry of Education, found themselves in a financial bind‘ On October 25, when all available funds had been exhausted by the agencies. the region authorized another By FRED SIMPSON Richmond Hill opened the scoring at the 10:38 mark of the first period assisted by Bernie Pedersen. That lead held up until 5:09 of the second when Bruce Smith got one past Brumwell. Rob- bie Yoteff put the Rams in front at 5:48 from Jim Cle- ment but the Tigers came back to tie it again at 6:07. Clement put Richmond Hill in front 3-2 at 3:40 of the third but the Tigers came right back to tie it at 5:18 on a goal by Jim Masin. GREAT STOPS The Rams also ran into a stumbling block in the per- son of Aurora Goalie Ron Brown during that final 20 minutes as he also came up with some fine puck-stop- ping. frontâ€"running Vaughan Na- tionals. The final 12 minutes saw STUMBLING BLOCK $15,000 to meet salary obliga- tions to the end of the year. The communities they serve are expected to provide funds for office space and operating costs other than salaries. When it agreed to put up the additional funds, regional coun- cil directed its committee to meet with Dr. Brunnelle and report back to council before December 1 with recommenda- tions on regional funding. A number of councillors were op- posed to providing further funds if the province was not prepared to share the cost. However when the council met December 13. Mayor Lazen- by said that no meeting had yet been arranged. That same week, Mr. Deacon met with the Richmond Hill- Thornhill Family Services and set up the meeting for Decem- ber 20. And in the absence of the commissioner, the commit- tee chairman, the Georgina representatives, and two of the members of the Legislature who serve the region, the delegation made the best presentation pos- sible. Meanwhile the agencies are continuing to provide personal and private counselling and are carrying on with plans for a number of family life education programs to take place in the new year in the areas they serve. The game was a rugged cont-est most of the way and sa-wfights between John Jal- sevac cf the Rams and Geor- ge Berger of the Tigers: and Berger again with Bob Ban- gay. The Rams thought they had the winning goal with nine minutes left in the game when they scored on- ly to have it disallowed. Scm‘e of the ‘Rams thought the puck was over the line as Goalie Brown grabbed it and fell backwards. No go. ANOTHER SAVE Brumwell’s final great save came with less than two minutes r maining when Mark P . ti-ce's low shot just ticked off his skate and by the Corner as rhe went right in alone. Richmond Hill fired 34 shots at the Tiger’s Brown. Brumwell at his spectacular best. He literally robbed Aurora’s Gord McFarlane on two close-in drives after the latter broke in all alone. The second effort saw McFar- lane sail right in, attempt to da 0 h.m, only to have Drum- well get a piece of the puck and deflect it over the net. The Hill goalie performed the same acrobarts with Dan- ny Atkinson who also walked right in and appeared to have Brumwell at his mercy.
