Enter Charge Getting to the church on time has resulted in some unexpected aggravation for York Regional Police Chief Bruce Crawford. Police Acted Properly, United Church Arrest This was the case Thurs- day night of last week when members of the police com- mission heard a report from Chief Crawford regarding a complaint made by Trinity United Church Minister Bruce Suitor. His complaint resulted from the arrest of Wayne Taylor, 21, and Arthur Bur- gin, 23, both of Willowdale, just outside the church after they had both been married in a double Wedding cere- mony. Mr. Suitor had objected to the fact three plain clothes- men entered the church dur- ing a religious ceremony, sat there while the ceremony was going on and then ap- prehended the principals out- side the church afterwards. He was also unhappy abOut his alleged treatment at the police station telling Commissioner Ray Twinney that he had wanted to see the chief but had been told he was too busy to see him. Chief Crawford told the commission that warrants had been out for the two men for break and enter in Richmond Hill and that the police had been informed the two wanted men would be getting married in the church. LIZ ROSEBLADE The police took up obser- vation around the church and one plain clothesman en- tered to see if the wanted men were at the church. A little later two other detec- tives entered a side door of the church, talked to church officials, and then left to await the bridegrooms out- side. “When they exited from the church four detectives arrested them with quiet dignity," said Chief Craw- ford, “and took them to the police station. The men were arrested outside the church and all the police were in plain clothes.†Chief Crawford agreed that Mr. Suitor had later at- tended the station and re- quested to see him but “at that time I was unable to see him. I wasn't even aware of the nature of the matter at that time." He said that Suitor had not left any request to have him call him at a later date “or I would have been very pleased to do so." 52 NUMBERS Nile-Owls Mr. Suitor was later in- terviewed by Deputy Chief Wally Harkness and at that time he “seemed to be satisfied with this inter- view. He did not request me to call him on this oc- casion either. “I am satisfied the ar- rests were carried out in a perfectly legal and dignified manner with no criticism to be directed at the officers concerned." Commissioner Twinney suggested he would talk to Mr. Suitor and ascertain if he had any further com- ments to make regarding the situation. Chief Crawford observed that if Mr. Suitor had any further complaints “he should come before the commis~ sion†and didn‘t feel it would be fair to ask him to pos- sibly get another report from the result of what Commis- sioner Twinney would bring back at the next meeting," Mr. Twinney said he thought it was his job as a commissioner to bring any complaint to the board and to talk to Mr. Suitor. “I can't say whether what has been said is right or wrong because I don't know the answers. That‘s why I want to talk to Mr. Suitor. Commissioner G o r d o n Cook objected to any im- plied criticism of the chief‘s report as well as to the method of arrest. “1 have the greatest re- spect for the police regard- less of where the arrest was made. I feel the detectives did an excellent job. If a warrant is out for the ar- rest of someone they should be arrested regardless of where they are or under what circumstances. Mr. Twinney said he wasn't questioning the right of the police to make the arrest or questioning the re- sultant report. “I just want to find out if it agrees with Mr. Suit- or's statements. I admit I erred in not speaking to Mr. Suitor directly instead of getting the story third-hand." Commission Chairman Judge William Lyon sug- gested Mr. Twinney talk to Mr. Suitor and bring back his remarks for the next meeting. He added that the board would also be agree- able to having him appear before them in person if he so desired. Alliston Sewage Plant Opens Mar. 7 The $800,000 Alliston Polâ€" lution Control Centre (sew- age treatment plant) will be officially opened March 7 by Rev. Arthur Downer MLA, Dufferin Simcoe, on behalf of Environment Minister James Auld. The aeration type plant and sewage collection sys- tem will contain two aera‘ tion tanks, two secondary clarifiers. a cholorine con- tact chamber, sludge holding tank, a plant building, yard piping, 5,500 feet of sani- tary sewer, 1,100 feet of 16 inch diameter- forcemain, a sewage pumping station and a standby generator. Proctor and Redfern were the consulting engineers and Cosentino Construction Lim- ited and Lisgar Construction Company the construction contractors. Construction time has consumed approx- imately 12 months. The churches on Richmond Hill’s east side ire again planning joint Lenten services, but this year there is an exciting difference. Each service will feature a one-act chancel drama based on the event of Jesus’ death. The dramas, written by W. A. Poovey, in- volve contemporary and Biblical characters and glorify Christ through portrayal of his friends and enemies alike. _ .. “I 1.... u... v._ -__ _ “Judas: Caiéï¬hï¬s, Pilate, Barabbas, Peter all prgspnt their peygmnal rpessages, teaching _4_‘I_ __J Xavitt'ilwléggogEgotï¬'EEéâ€"{aEezï¬iï¬eSséa 'needs ana doubts of people today.
