Two Richmond Hill youths admitted having small quanti- ties of marijuana when YRP searched Apartment 609 at 48 Laverock Avenue at 4 pm January 16. The illicit ma- terial was found in a bed- room side table and on a livingroom table. 1 A large number of those ‘appearlng, mostly young adults, were convicted and fined for drug possession. The amount of business faced in York Region drug court is so large that two full days per month instead of one have been set aside for drug cases at Newmarket Provincial Court starting in At the February session more than 200 people over- flowed the courtroom with 140 charges listed on the court docket. Many cases were adjourned to set trial dates. Several preliminary hearings were held. A num- ber of accused were sent to County Court trial on traf- ficking charges. Others Were convicted and jailed to await sentencing. Federal Prosecutor Smith said YRP searched Halsted’s home with a warrant. On his arrival he was caught with 6 ‘grams of marijuana in four packages. Richmond Hill admitted ownership of two plastic bags of marijuana found in a car November 24 at 8 pm on Dufferin Street in Vaughan Town. Nickle quit grade 10 at Bayview Sec- ondary School, got a job and then became unemployed, the court was told. STOUFFVILLE RAID Student Maurice Halsted, 18, of 28 Fairview Avenue, Stouffville denied having marijuana for trafficking purposes but admitted the lesser and included charge drug possession. Caught with an extremely dangerous and potent new drug recently added to the Food and Drug Act, Phen- cycodene (PCD), an 18-year- old youth was jailed three days and ï¬ned $150 or 15 days jail. INDEFINITELY HOSPITALIZED Defense Attorney Alfred Stong of Richmond Hill said Morey’s co-accused Steven Russell was a person suffer- ing from the effects of drugs, having been transfer- red to a provincial institution at Penetang after being in a Metro mental hospital for a time. The charge against Russell was withdrawn, he being indefinitely hospital- ized. Marshall has been work- ing since the age of 16, ex- cept for two years in hos- pital after an accident that crippled him the court was told. He was convicted and fined $50 or five days jail. 3 WERE INNOCENT Charges against three others. one of them his cousin. were withdrawn after he pleaded guilty. The oth- ers were Lawrence Williams. George Rose and Rodney McMullen. One was Robert McAllis- ter, 22. of 17 Main Street North. whose apartment was searched. The other was Glendon Avard, 21, of the same address. McAlllster works in Aurora and Avard works in Richmond Hill, the court was told. TRAFFICKING CHARGE Both were charged with having marijuana for the purpose of trafficking but would only admit the lesser and included offense of simple possession. This plea was accepted by Federal Prosecutor Smith. Mrs. Smith said YRP, as a result of information re- ceived, went to the apart- ment. In a bedroom night table they found a bag of marijuana. They also found some in a flashlight. Another bag of the illicit substance was found in Avard’s dresser. Confined to a wheelchair as the result of an accident, Paul Marshall, 23, of 123 Forest Glen, Newmarket. ad- mitted having marijuana January 19 when police with a search warrant raided his home at 5:30 pm January 19. The drug was found in a bedroom and in a kitchen drawer. Less than six ounces of marijuana in several bags were found in a lunch box when Morey and Russell were charged, the court was told. Two Newmarket youths caught at 5 pm December 11 after a YRP search warrant raid at a Newmarket apart- ment, were each _fined $50 or five days jail with time to pay.
