Many farm young people enlisted in the armed forces during World War II and the others had a most successful p r o v i n c e-wi‘de fundraising campaign. This enabled them to send 350 subscriptions to Reader‘s Digwt to overseas hospitals, rest rooms and canteens, provide a field hospital, hospital station wa- gon and a mobile canteen, don-alte $1,000 for prisoner-of- war parcels, $1,000 to the Navy League of Canada for comforts for sailors and merchant marines an-d $1.000 to the British Mine Sweepem’ Auxiliary. During World War LI Junior Farmers felt the need for more complete organiza- tion [and in 1944 a small group waited on Minister of Agriculture Thomas Kenn-e- dy. He offered $500 to cover travelling expenses for a boy and a girl from each county to attend an organizational meeting. FIRST BIG MEETING So it was that on April 4. 1944, 48 rural young people assembled in the Ontario Parliament Buildings and unanimously voted to orga- nize (the Junior Farmers As- sociation of Ontario.
