Big winners were members of the Leaside club who defeated Sarnia in a sudden-death game to take the championship in an exciting weekend of local curling. Leaside had to beat the previously unbeaten Sarnia club twice to win the double- knockout playoffs. Minor Bantam OMHA Struggle Hill’s Wilson-Niblett Minor Peewees Win Kingston Tournament Wilson-Niblett Minor Peewees won the Kingston Tournament last weekend. In‘ the first game played Saturday they fought Whitby to a tie at the end of regulation time on goals by Henderson, Halliday and Allen. Back to back penalty shots which continued for eight times saw Whitby finally take the game 7-6. In the second game the Hillers made certain of a win by scoring nine times and shutting out Ajax. Dave Jordan earned the shutout and goal- getters were Dougie Eldridge with a hat trick, Barnett with a pair, Shannon with a pair, Halli- day an-d Henderson with a singleton each. In the third game Jordan got another shut- out as Wilson-Niblett took it from Belleville 4-0. Scoring for Richmond Hill were Shannon, Mc- Gregor, Halliday and Henderson. PEEWEE When Barrie couldn‘t make it here for the first game of the playoffs March 8, the Lions took on the Victoria and Grey Minor Bantam “B"s and came up with a 6-1 win, Scoring for the B5 was David Gates from Jim Bur- nett and Goalie Mark Por- ter. Hitting the mark for the Lions were David Plaxton with two. Joel Reeves, Rich- ard Hughes, Scott, Bartlett and Jeff Joslin, Assists were earned by Reeves (3), Kerr, Plaxton, Cross (2), Majury (2) and O‘Sullivan. .. The Lions lost a 2-1 game Saturday night in Barrie. Af- ter two periods the score was tied 1-1, only to have Barrie score the winner mid- way through the third. Ricky Warren was in goal for the Hill and made some fine saves. This was the first game in a three out of five playoff series. Scoring for the Hill Badmintoners lose I9 - 5 St. Paul The Richmond Hill Bad- minton club came through with a somewhat lacklustre performance in their opening playoff match losing 19-5 to a very strong St. Paul’s team. The defeat means the Hill team will have to win by 20-4 in their return match to en- ter the finals. Scores: Ladies doubles, Enid Grant and Joan Freeman losing 9- 15, 5-15; Hilda Baxter and Jill Johnson losing 7-15, 11-15; Carol McDonald and Jill Dalton splitting 11-15, 15-10. Men‘s doubles: Cam Cairn- losing 9-15. 12-15; Randy. Carlson and Derek Smith splitting 6-15, 17-15; Doug Andrews and Bob White los- ing 11-15. 6-15. ' MINOR BANTAM In the first game of the quarter-finals of the OMHA playdowns, mond Hill‘s Tournaments Inc. Minor Bantams defeated the Midland Minor Bantams 6-1. Scoring for the Hill were Frank Virgo from Danny Gi- rard, Gary Gentry from Steve Madden and Steve Bowers, Peter Hallinday from Nigro (a real beauty), Chris Nye from Nigro and Nye, Dino Capotosto played well in goal, limiting Midland to one counter. In the second game played in Midland March 8, the Hill- ers were again the victors, this time 3-2. Marksman for Tournaments was Nigro who with assists ,going to Bowers, Blair Lewis and Halliday. Halliday shone in this conâ€" test. Goalie Capotosto was injured and had to leave the game in the third period with Steve Price taking his place in the net. of the series which ended in a 3â€"3 tie after an overtime period. Goalgetters for the Hill were Phil Wood from Nigro. Nye from Girard and Wood from Nigro. Steve Price did yeoman duty in the goal. The deciding game of the series was scheduled for Wednesday night in the Hill arena. Hopefully this week- end the Tournaments Inc. will be playing in the On- against a team from the eastern section of the province. MINOR PEEWEE 2nd Team Stroud 5â€"0 and 10-2. Minor Bantam 2nd Team Victoria 8; Grey Trust mov- ed into the finals of the York Simcoe Bantam “2" Hockey League with a 3-2 win over Stroud March 5 to win the best of three semi finals in two straight games. The Hillers came out flying as Ross Querengesser scored at 2:01 of the first period from Jim Wood and Robert Greiner. Wood made it 2-0 when he whistled home a shot from Greiner and Pete Tipold. In the dying mo- ments of the second period, Greiner scored what proved to be the eventual winner unassisted. With the game well in hand. Victoria ran into a rash of penalties, and with two Hillers watching from the penalty box. Stroud finally beat Steve Shadoff. This was followed by another power play goal by Stroud as they closed the gap to 3-2. Victoria hung on to preserve the victory, and they now await the winner of Noble- ton and Schomberg in the best three out of five for the championship. Victoria & Grey played good Samaritan last Friday night, and were treated to a hockey lesson when they ab- sorbed a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the younger peewee Lions. When Peewee Manager Doug Condy had two teams fail to live up to their com- mitments Friday, Victoria agreed to play, although they could muster only nine hoc- key players. The Lions were certainly not hospitable as they skated relentlessly and appeared to have magnets on their sticks, so consistently did they come up with the puck. Dave Cates scored Vic- toria’s only goal from Phil McLaughlin and Jim Bur- nett. Reeves led the Lions with a goal and three assists. Plaxton fired two goals and had an assist. while Cross set up two goals. Hughes, Bart- lett and Joslin each scored once, as Kerr, O'Sullivan and Majury each added one assist to their totals, ’ Victoria & Grey Trust blew a two goal lead in the dying minutes of the 3rd period last Saturday in the old arena to a bantam club from Goulding Park, and had to settle for a 3-3 tie. Cates scored in the first period from Angus McGregor and Burnett. but Goulding Park tied the contest with a blistering slapshot. The Hillers caught fire as they rammed home two goals to Neil Putnam scored from Greg MacMillan and Jim Wood, and Greg Walton converted 3 Pete Tipold pass into a score. Two Victoria players were penalized for infractions with three minutes left in the game. and Goulding Park was quick to capitalize and tie the game. The Hillers, how- ever, came up with a strong game in preparation for the .Ajax. Freds ‘with goals from Mark Joslin (and John Evelyn with Gary ‘Sutherland assisting, turned back Barrows, whose only counter was from the stick of Steven Rumble unassisted. Another excellent game was played as Kinnear stop- ped Charlton 1-0 on a goal from Derek Veitch assisted by Mark Evisoni. Congratulations to Pat and Peter Morley, coaches of Kin- near Pontiac for the first place finish. The playoffs got underway March 9 with Barrow’s Insur- ance defeating Kinnear Pon- tiac 3-1 and Fred's Towing handing Charlton Hardware .1 5-1 beating. The big white machine of Kinnear was stopped with only one goal scored by Mark E l l is o n unassisted, while Barrows with goals from Danny Maggi and two from Eddie Iafano, assisting Rob- bie Apenis, Dennis Stewart and Duane Aubie, took the first game in the best two of three semi-finals. During this game Iafano scored on a pc- nalty shot called against Kinnear for having a player cover the puck in the goal crease. in the other game Fred's took the lead with two goals by Mark Joslin 2 by Gary Sutherland and 1 by Steven Moritsugu. Assists were earn- ed by Joslin and Reg Golub. Charlton’s only reply was by Bruce MacLean assisting Roland Bellach. NOVICE James Lazenby from Step- hen Riswick and Michael Girard and Girard from La- zenby scored the goals which game Rascone Construction a 2-1 win over City Wide. Paul Robson was helped by Jim Walmsiey on the City Wide goal. Galaxy Restaurant shutout Allencourt as they scored five goals. Cro-we got two, assisted on both by Stephen Quigg and on one by Scott White. Wayne Harris and Quigg scored unassisted and White was aided by Quigg. Edward Devlin scored for Rascone Constructibn and Stephen Quigg IOI‘ Gala xy in a 1-1 tie game played March 9. City Wide defeated Allen- court 3-2 on goals by Andrew Field, Paul Sarazin and Todd Sears and helpers by Mike Osborne and John Corbish- iey Allencourt’s c o u n te r s were netted by Danny Murri and Richard Smith. Edward Devlin scored the- only goal of the game March 8 when Rascone defeated AJ- lencourt 1-0. ATOM Ken Large came up with a hat trick as Consumers Gas defeated Allencourt Pharma- cy 4-1. David Banton added a single goal and an assist for Consumers and Greg Truss, Mark Hayward and Keith Boulter got assists. Scoring for Allencourt was Jim Barton who was set up by Doug Walton and Paul Thomas. A pair of goals by Bill Vrantisidis and singles by Cleve Jones, Mike Smith, David Giles and Adrian Steenson with assists by (2) and John Black gave Knapp’s Sico Paints a 6-1 win over Dan’s Esso March 9. Green had two assists, Camp- bell and Paul West one. In the first game of the playoffs Rick Clendenning was aided by Chuck Lusk on the goal which gave Eric's Sports a 1-0 win over Dynes. In the first game of the Tonys-Shields series Tony's won 3-0 on goals by Green, Shane Banton and Tom Wil- son with help from Ken Bar- ber, Campbell, Buchan_ West and Green. In the semi-finals Bob's Pant Shop defeated Rice's Flowers 5-1 on a hat trick and an assist by Mike O’Don- nell. a goal and an assist by Allen Plitong and a goal by Russ Thompson. Danny Wright unassisted accounted for the Rice goal. Also in the semi-final Kent Clothes ran up a 5-3 score over Seafood Corner. Joey Thurston came up with a hat trick, Ian Ball with a pair and David Snider with a helper for Kents. Russ Thornhill connected for two goals and Brian. Buchan for one, with Tim King and Jeff Briggs earning assist points for Seafood. OMHA quarter-f i n al “C” Playoffs in three straight ‘games. ‘ They opened the series with a 6-2 win and followed it up 'v-sith a 9-4 win. ‘ John Lenneville was the big howitzer in this last game with a six-goal performance .to go along with three assists. lOther goals went to Heintzman with two and five assists; Jim Gerber, two goals; Dale Roffey, one goal, two assists; Berne Engle, one goal. In other action, Ridges Juveniles d o w n e (1 West Rouge 7-3 to take a two games to one lead in their best-of-five OMHA quarter- finals in West Rouge. This goal inspired the Oak Ridges team and went on to dominate the game as Legge tied the game at the four minute mark and they went on to score four more un- answered goals to win going ,away.
